Esse glasses

Post by GrahamB »

Hi all

Last year we got a good heads up on Esse glasses on sale at Myer.

If they come up again can someone post a note to that effect. I need another half dozen as I'm sure others do.

Thanks

Graham,

I am not sure whether they are still on sale or not but I have seen these glasses here in Sydney. You can certainly try Myer stores in Sydney by asking Brisbane store to call them.

I bought those glasses while on sale here in Sydney (ex Grace Bros). I have been using Riedel glasses but it was too good to refuse not to buy Esse glasses after checking it out carefully. Certainly they do the job as good as Riedel at a fraction of the price!!! I think I paid $27 for 6 glasses....what a bargain.

Good luck
David

These usually come up in the mid year Stocktake sale and the post Christmas rush. You might need to shop around as each store seems to have limited stock ofdifferent glasses (I could only find the white wine glasses, the Riedel Chianti Classico clone) at Indooroopilly last Christmas. $20 a sixpack though!

cheers

In Sydney this week, Myers is having a 30% off all boxed glassware sale. I bought a box of four Luigi Bormioli bordeaux glasses for $28 reduced from $40 for a friend yesterday. I didn't notice any of the Esse glasses though.

While I was there and looking at the riedels, the salesman said they were having a sale on the loose glasses today but he didn't know how much off, yesterday. Haven't had a chance to get up there today to have a look. I was hoping to get a couple of burgundy glasses but they are hardly a bargain there when not on sale. Actually, just rang and the loose glassware is on sale today (and longer?) at 30% off too. Brings most of the vinum range down to arond $30 a stem.
Cheers,
Kris

I recently bought 8 Waterford Marquis glasses at DJ's for $148 ($18.50 each), which I think is a steal. I feel they are the perfect size and shape for red wine. Not too big so that the wine is too far away, perfectly shaped to swirl and the highest quality thin crystal. I've only had one break (tochwood) in the last year and they get used often enough....

Hi

Just back from my local Myer store in Brisbane western suburbs and find the Esse range of glasses on sale @ 50% off.

Just got 6 x 620Ml red wine glasses for $20.77. (Myer card disc)

The staff say that "Esse" is being changed to "Vue" which is also on sale for 30% off. Similar packaging but appeared to be a slightly different size glass.

Get yours if you want some.

Just back from buying my riedels and the loose glassware is only on sale today but the boxed stuff is on sale for two weeks from yesterday. Still quite a few boxes of the Esse glassware there at 50% off at $22.45 for the reds and $19.99 for the whites. Bloody good value really.
Cheers,
Kris

I had some Bormioli Rocco's that don't seem to be made any more. Not really great wine glasses, but visually the most stunning I've seen in a while, until the stem snaps off between your fingres. Esse look good but I'm still holding out for glasses that taper smoothly all the way instead of having that two parts stuck together look.

I can't believe the timing here. I posted a message on the 9th may for anyone seeing Esse on special and here it is 4 days later and they are there.

Powerball tonight could be coming to QLD.

Thanks for the tips guys. I just got back from Myer in Sydney. These are great glasses. For those that don't know them, the reds are pure Riedel Vinum shiraz copies and the whites are (?) very nicely designed too.

After the last two years of buying them on sale at Myer I think I have now accumulated just under 3 doz reds and 2.5 doz white. That should keep me going for a while !

And now to run off to Perth to see if this a national thing.

Hooray for cheap glasses! I seem to have the clumsiest friends in the universe! One of them only ever gets plastic these days :o

Crystalex (Czech) 450ml classic-shape red wine glasses $14.95/6 from House. Not those things that look like a fishbowl on a stem. Nice 6+secs mid-tone resonance when held by the base and flicked on the rim. A bit wavey near the bottom of the bowl. They will be broken as is the fate of all glassware but at $2.50 each, who cares? Plenty of room to swirl 150-200 ml of wine.

Thanks for that Kris - will pop down to Myers over the week-end. The look-a-like Vinum shiraz actually holds 620ml - nearly a bottle. You wouldn't believe it and most laugh when you say its nearly equivalent to a bottle - anyway you just have to be sure not to fill it up too much or you start drinking far more than you thought  with dire consequences.

By the way nice to see you back here bacchebabe

cheers

Thanks also.
Just got back from Myer sydney. They have very few left. Check all boxes before buying. The Esse whites I checked had 2 whites that had been "de-stemmed"!

Just back from our nearby Myer. Stuff all left in Esse unless you want brandy Balloons or champagne flutes. The Vue range lurks as a more expensive replacement though, looks like they have spent years running out discontinued stock??

Might try the city store tomorrow.

Thanks for the welcome back Paul. Hadn't left or anything - just busy. New job and stuff and limited time to post although get the chance to read every now and again.

Things settling down a bit lately so hopefully more time to post soon.

See ya.
Cheers,
Kris

Went to Myer Parramatta, in Sydney's west. Plenty of everything, even after I left. My daughter's 21st is coming up and I am not going to put my Reidels, or even the Spiegelaus out for that. These worked out at just over $3-3.50 per stem and look quite good.
SO if you go to the outer suburban Myer stores you should be OK.

The whites are exact copies of the Riedel Vinum Chianti Classico (416/15) glass (yes I compared them next to each other). I read elsewhere that the reds were copies of the Riedel Bordeaux glass, not the Shiraz glass. Can anyone confirm or deny this for certain?

Checked with Myer, the Esse range has been discontinued. Compared the Vue range to the Riedels in the store though and discovered that the Vue "Red Wine" glass is a Riedel Vinum Bordeaux copy, and the "White Wine" glass is a copy of the Riedel Vinum Chianti glass. Both available for $50 per 6 pack, although they'll probably come up on special for less than that at some point.

The Vue range is available in Myer Sydney till 30 May at $34-65 (pack of 6) with discount card. That is $5.77 a glass. Good value.
