TN: Veritas Bulls Blood 2000

Post by Wizz »

Shiraz Mouvedre, 14% ABV.

Earth and fruitcake nose with a perfurmed raspberry note through it, that trns quite floral over a few hours. In the mouth this is earthy plums, with a redcurrant topnote. Perhaps a little charred oak in this but integrated nicely into a more fruit driven profile. The palate texture is the highlight, rich and silky (think couverture chocolate!), although the whisky like tingle on th back palate cuts in a little too much. Some fine tannin to finish. This worked very well with a spicy salami home made pizza.

I dont think this is going anywhere, drink soon (I think the 01 is built for more ageing).

As an afterthought, If I was served this blind, I might have guessed it was Zinfandel!

cheers

Wizz,

Went to Veritas on Saturday. My first time to try any of their wines; I found the reds to have a pronounced raw, meaty, spicy character to them. In fact the Bulls Blood 02 was less pronounced in this respect, but still dense and chewy. The two in particular that I am referring to were the Christa Rolf and the Heinrich; do you have any experience with them? I meant to ask how long they had been in bottle for,I was bit puzzled by the wines.

Cheers

Hi Grant,

I'm a bit light on experience with the Veritas wines, but I wasnt that impressed on my only CD visit there a year or so ago.

The 01 Heinrich showed quite poorly in a lineup of 01 SA shiraz and GSM's.

There is a Veritas dinner in Bris on Wednesday night - sold out now - might get to find out more about their style then. Are you going?

Wizz,

No, not going to that one. Looking forward to getting your reflections on the wines. I was quite non-plussed by the wines at cellar door, but didn't have enough technical knowledge to be able to say wether or not any were faulty, the nose in particular on the two 02 Grenache based wines was quite uninviting. Not corked or bretty, just what I tried to describe as a raw meatiness. I just tried them all and said thank you and went on my way,it was pretty busy at the time.

Hope the tasting is good.

Cheers
