Dinner at the Safari Seafare restaurant at Newtown. One of our group is an old friend of my wife's who's allergic to reds, so I tend to save our best whites for her visits.

Lakes Folly Chardonnay 1996: Gorgeous stuff. Refined, slightly nutty and honeyed flavour. Up with the best chardonnays I've ever had. 95/100. (Great value at the $25 I paid at auction)

West Cape Howe Shiraz 2002: Fairly soft and subtle stuff - aromatic, not overwhelming with anything. Oak is subtle, tannins are either very mild or barely there. Might gain a little complexity with short-mid term cellaring. Very drinkable now. The bottle notes viognier content, but it wasn't obvious

David Wynn Chardonnay 2000: The reserve white, in case we needed more wine. Perfectly drinkable, but paled in comparison with the Lakes Folly.

I loved the 2001 WCH Shiraz and bought several cartons as a good quaffer. The 2002 I felt was a little lacking compared to the 2001. Had one of the 01's a few nights ago and it is still good but going nowhere.

Showed it to a friend as a blind tasting when it had been opened for 24 hours and he thought it was quite OK.

Just have to drink and enjoy the last six bottles.
