Wow, sorry Neville, I didn't email you directly. I figured that my non-payment would rule me out sufficiently.

Sincere apologies for the inconvenience. Hope you all have a great night, won't let you down next time!

Cheers

About ten no-shows, including five expected from the forum (and associates) and four from the German embassy. Might take payment a week in advance in future.

No probs, Tim, I was just trying to make it as easy as possible for the restaurant, and they catered for 45 and then 38 turned up, and that included about nine walk-ins.
NB: I import wine from 100 boutique producers in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, NZ and SA. You may think my opinions are biased ;-) As opinions are :-)

All,

Hats off the Neville for organising this. The event was a delight, as was the venue. I'll leave any tasting notes to others better qualified, but the wines fully met my high expectations: refined mineral and citrus characters with fruit and acid in magnificant balance. Long line of taste filling the mouth from front to back, and lasting long after each sip. Delightfully low alcohol, with not the least sign of thinness of mouthfeel nor flavour.

My palate is still to become accustomed to the higher residual sugar levels of this Rieslings, but the Kabinetts and Spatleses were immediately appreciated by my palate. A terrific opportunity for learning about an icon style and source of fine white wine.

Thank you Neville, and please do repeat these events with pre-payment on EoI; perhaps with refunds (or 90%) if cancellation occurs with more than (say) 48 hours before the evening.

Rgds,
John

Went to the Melbourne event and can second the above comments pretty much verbatim...especially re the residual sugar levels having grown up on Australian Rieslings......takes a bit of getting used to. Am defintely up for future events, hope Neville can resolve the cancellation issues...pre payment with a cancellation fee seems fair to me.

Another for Softies comments verbatim ....
I was enjoying the banter too much to consider notes, but the whole line-up and the insights provided by the hosts was a real eductaion for me.
Palate still needs some convincing on the sweeter wines (250 grams of RS anyone?) but the class was evident in all of them. Even bought some Kabinetts (v sweet for me) so i must be coming round.
Got a real kick out of meeting fellow forumites John, Kerry and Dave.
Finally, i couldn't get over the great value for a wonderful evening, many thanks Neville.

AWESOME value dinner for $145 food & 16/17wines,seriously undersold yourself. The normal dego at galileo goes for $110($120 with cheese) & an extra $80 for matching wines (6/7glasses) so roughly $200pp (notincluding water, tip, etc..).

Overall great wines, and interesting to hear Thomas' views on the wines being fruity not sweet as we label them, it was a comedy duo between you two at times! :P

Standouts for me were the 08' Juffer Kabinett, 07' juffer-sonnenhur spatlese, 06' Nielderberg helden Auslese LGC. & the WOTN 98' Auslese LGC

thanks Nev. Looking forward to the next dinner, perhaps encompassing a range of wines inported by Eurocentic (champers, White burgs, Red burgs, Sth African Reds, NZ sauvignons, etc.) great opportunity to educate my wife on these foreign wines.

I am really disappointed to see the other fourmites turned up. I asked Neville if the auswine people had come along and the fool said no, they all cancelled. I agree it was an excellent evening. I may have a crack at a brief write up over the weekend but there were seriously a number of great wines on offer. I ended up having a beer after the event with Thomas. He is such a nice guy. What a great life, travelling the world and making great wine.

And yes the WOTN was the 98' Auslese LGC for me too.

The 98 was pretty special, it exploded into every corner of your mouth with a delicious sweetness and acidity, a very powerful wine. The BA at the end went on forever.

Food was great. Different characteristics came through that complemented the wines.

Enjoyed myself immensely.

Thanks to those who came along and thanks for the many kind comments.

It's not hard to get on with Thomas -- I feel closer to him than my brothers! We had a bunch of laughs over the four days and he was seriously impressed by many things in Australia: the ability of chefs to match the wines (he said Germans wouldn't have come close); simple traffic and parking initiatives; the facilities at my storage warehouse; the friendliness of (most of) the people ...

He wants to come back, and I have three other Germans lined up for next year. The next plan is to do a series of Burg dinners around the country in May and June without winemakers but showcasing the range. Sounds like a lot of work but could be fun.

I kept meaning to write up my notes from the Schloss Lieser dinner but somehow never got around to it. Too many wines I suspect for my two finger typing style. So I was glad to see an excellent write up from Huon Hooke today in the Sydney Morning Herald. The article did remind me how much I enjoyed the single vineyard Brauneberger Juffer Kabinett 08. This was the wine I most wanted to put a couple of cases away for next summer and a few nights in between.
