TN: Seppelt 1999 Original Sparkling Shiraz

Post by David Lole »

Deep ruby with brick red in the edges. Very fine, persistent bead. Oodles of blackberry and sweet earth on the nose with a spicy, dusty oak backing. The palate displays moderate weight with sweet black fruit, some tar, meatiness and an impressive creamy texture from the swirling mousse. There's a trace of sweetness, good acidity and almost creamy, soft fine-grained tannin in quite a sustained savoury finish. Highly Recommended and great QPR at $14/bottle. Drink now to 2009+.

How does it compare to the 1998 vintage?
I absolutely loved that wine, others suggested on this forum before that the 1999 is good, but falls short of the outstanding '98.
What do you think David?
Cheers,

Not much between them, Attila. Will have more info for you on Tuesday. Monday, we're doing a sparkling Shiraz tasting and although I'm not sure of all the wines being tasted, I might throw a few more in to give you a side-by-side assessment. Will be in touch.

Attila,

Took the '98 along to the tasting today - 3 guesses? - corked, corked or corked? You got it! Will report back after visiting the cellar to fetch another. Bloody corks!

I thought the 99 was really great value when I tried it a couple of weeks ago. All that secondary leathery, mushroomy complexity that Seppelt gets. Much more interesting to my palate than most of the the other simple, fruity styles on the market.

I will be interested in the 2002 (they skipped 2000 and 2001), because that is a different tack, releasing it so early.

regards
Chris
