I was related a story recently about a prominent Australian golf journo entertaining a leading Australian player at his home. Said player is not a wine drinker; likes it,but has no real interest. Journo is a passionate winophile, but in keeping with his personality( Why would I try anything else,I know what I like!!), his whole cellar of 2000 plus bottles is basically all Rockford,Greenock Creek,Wendouree and Kay's ( a few curio's abound but you get the drift).

Half way through dinner, they run out of wine. Journo instructs player to go top the cellar and pick "anything he likes", knowing that he really can't go wrong.

Of course,he forgets about the 3 bottles of Three Rivers 1996 that he has secreted away in a corner( at the time selling for about $1500 a bottle!). But of course, there is no way that someone without any knowledge of wine would even think of bringing one of those up,would they??!!

Player arrives triumphantly from the cellar, " I found one a bit different from the others". Bottle was duly opened and consumed, although apparently it took some time for the colour to return to the journo's face !

Very amusing,a few of us are still enjoying that one.

Cheers

Very good story, I really hope it's true cos if it is, then it's a belter. NEVER let people go and select ANYTHING from your cellar, Murphy always ensures they find the gems you were saving for a special occasion.

Got home one night to find my now ex wife with a bottle of cheaply labelled wine ready for the spag bol.........1986 Yarra Yering No.1, a classic. She thought the crappy label meant it was cheap.

If you can see through it, it's not worth drinking!

Steve,

Absolutely true, the player is a friend of mine, and our coach was also in attendance.

I can see why you divorced her, there's no way back from doing something like that!!

Great story Grant!

I have a NWR question: any truth in the rumour you broke Anthony Painter's driver on the practice range before the Jacobs Creek? :-)

I'm nervous, as I'm visiting Adelaide and trying to meet up with Gavin - the day before I play some golf...

cheers

Andrew

Is nothing sacred!!?? I've been outed!

Actually,it was at the ANZ tournament in the practice round. 9th tee, waiting for my turn,I pull Paints' driver out to have a look. Put the head on the ground and just lightly flex the shaft, SNAP,the head falls off!! Shock ,Horror, conspiracy accusations...... actually it was quite funny after the shock wore off. I did him a favour actually,it was going to snap sometime and probably sooner rather than later.

Pity he didn't snap mine,it wasn't working that well!!

Cheers
