forum technical advice - posting pictures

Post by Gavin Trott »

Hello

Been asked how people post pictures in their posts on auswine.

Had to admit   , I don't know as I've never done it!

Good for the forum members to know however, so how about someone who does it successfully helps us out and posts here how its done?

Anyone, anyone?

It's pretty simple if you have your images hosted on a web server (e.g. Flickr or Imageshack). Right click on the image you want to post, select "copy image address". Start a thread or reply in Auswine forum. Paste your image address (an URL) in the message body, select/highlight the URL and click the "Img" icon on the formatting toolbar. When you post the message the picture will appear in the text body (scaled down to ~250 pixels wide). An example below:

A picture I've taken hosted at Flickr:

Hope that helps.

Imageshack: http://www.imageshack.us/ (not .com)

Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/

You have to create a free account to upload images, from there it is easy, Imageshack provides the links formatted for forum software like this one, with the img tags already included. You can also choose the display size and whether clicking on the image shows it in a larger size.

Glen, phBB forums liike this one use extra [img] tags that are not part of html, these won't work on other web sites. So there is different code for full-size images, hotlinks and thumbnail images for both forums and standard web sites. The differece in the two alternatives of appears to be only uppercase tags vs lowercase tags to cater for server settings.

Examples:
Thumbnail:

Full size:

HTML code for websites (doesn't show fully here):
"<img><br>Shot at 2006-02-24"

Its been a while since this topic was raised but do those people who post photos always have to upload the photo first to a public site like flicker before embedding the image in their posts. It seems there is no way to embed a photo directly from one's computer.

Here is the process to do it without hosting the photo yourself:
  • When posting a new thread or reply, click the "Full Editor & Preview" button
  • Underneath the submit panel is another section with two tabs, Options and Attachments, click Attachments
  • Press the Add Files button and browse for the file on your computer
  • Press the Place inline button after it uploads
Here is a test image I uploaded using that process:

You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

This forum doesn't support resizing images when uploading, so you'll need to manually resize on your computer beforehand.

I use postimages.org myself as it does all the resizing, thumbnails, etc.

You can use MS Photo Gallery which will do basic resizing/retouching. (I think they killed it in Win10 but you can still download it)

Thanks. I thought the old photo tool disappeared. I just wasn’t sure if it had morphed into something new or was still available.

I use the free image hosting service imgur.com - it will handle resizing for you and auto generate the code to embed your image in a forum post (and elsewhere on the web).
