1914 Shiraz and Old Bastard Shiraz, info wanted.
Hi,
I live in Sweden and on Monday they are releasing the February releases at the Swedish bottle shops. Among the new releases are two Australian wines I was wondering about. 2001 Nineteen Fourteen Shiraz and 2001 Old Bastard Shiraz. I was wondering and I am hoping that someone on this forum had some notes on these two wines.
Andres
PS. Grange 98 AND 96 sells for around AUD 260.00 over here.

2001 O'Bastard was excellent but for the $ I would go for their Stonehorse 02 for immediate gratification. The 98/99 O'Bastard were far more superior than their 2001 if u can find...
Tried both the JJ Hahn 2001 with Mr.Binder during his winemaker's dinner, wasnt too impressed. His best 2001 effort for me was the Magpie Election. Eagerly waiting to try his other 2001s offering such as the Hanisch & Grand Viking when Mr.Binder return for another wine dinner in a month time. Stay tune!
Don't miss out on the Grange 1998, a legend in the making.

Thanks MartinC,
I think I will go for the Old Bastard Shiraz.
Unfortunately there isn't a great selection of Australian wines at the Swedish Monopole, but now and then we do get some good ones. The only one producer from which we can buy different vintages is Penfolds, and yes, I did buy Grange 98 (and 96 and 94) for around AUD 260.00/bottle. Penfold is also one of only three or four producers with multiple wines for sale.
Other good wines I have bought over here is Cullen 2001 Cabernet Merlot and Vasse Felix 2001 Shiraz.
Thanks again.

Anders,
Unlike Martin I liked both these wines and purchased some of the 2001 JJ Hahn 1914 Shiraz. Here are my TN's for both wines.
J.J. Hahn 1914 Shiraz SA2003 – vintage 2001 is due to be released in Australia in August or September. The 1914 refers to the year the vines were planted. This wine is more savoury than the 1928 vines wine and not quite as big. Tannins are smooth and it has a beautiful mouth feel and a noticeably well built structure. A well developed harmonious complexity is assisted by the savoury dark red berry fruit and chocolate that has a long drying finish. Rated as Highly Recommended with *** for value now, this rating may improve as the wine reaches maturity around 2006 and beyond. It’s simply a lovely wine.
Kaesler 2001 Old Bastard Shiraz SA2003 Bottled only one month ago, this is the first review published on this wine and I would like to thank Reid Bosward for allowing me to try it. A lifted perfumed nose of great complexity (that was not inky black) showing rose petals was quite a surprise considering the inky black colour of the wine.
On the palate the first thing immediately noticeable is the “slippery†mouth feel which is created by the ultra smooth ever so slightly dusty tannins and pure deep fruit with refreshing acid. It's intensely flavoured without being over extracted and although there is a slight amount of char, the fruit flavours of liquorice, aniseed, chocolate etc sucks up the char and finishes with great intensity and length. This is only of full-bodied rich wine with a layered seamless structure and is stunningly seductive and silky. Rated as Excellent it should peak around 2005. It's not cheap at $120 but is a wine worth experiencing, especially if money is no object.
I am surprised that Martin is still sprouting the great virtues of the 02 Stonehorse as in another post he said "I drank the Stonehorse'02 2nd time round. This time I can't finished the btl. n left it overnite.
The following day, the Stonehorse'02 was tired.
Sadly the Stone-HORSE is a "sprinter" not a "stayer"."
There was also a huge debate on Parkers site about this wine and generally most people think the 02 Stonehorse was over rated by Parker.

Howdy Ric,
The only other JJ Hahn 1914 I had was the 1999 and I marked the 2001(supposely to be a better vintage) against it and it didnt live up to it's predecessor. It's a touch lighter and not as intense. Supple, yes but more berry fruited than those dark fruits(plums & prunes) & mocha with is associated with the O'Vines Barossa Shiraz.
I love the Stonehorse 2002 for imeadiate consumption. It was firing on all cylinders, almost as good as the O'Bastard 2001(not as polished) but not the day after. My humble opinion is that this wine will not cellared well and best to consumed b4 5yrs fr the vintage.
Here are some 2002 u will like:
1)Heartland Director's Cut
2)Mr.Riggs
Cheers,

Anders,
The JJ Hahn seems pricey over ur side of the pond and the OB is relatively a bargain.
JJ Hahn OZ is around AU$50 & OB is AU$160!

Martin,
Who says that 01 is a better vintage? Riper in many parts - absolutely, but better? In what way? IMO many of the 99's will still be kicking long after the 01's are dead.
FWIW I agree that the 99 is better wine, here is my last TN and it shows that with both the TN and the rating.
J J Hahn Nineteen Fourteen Shiraz (1999 vintage) Oct 03
The last time I tried this wine was at Veritas Winery in 2000 and was impressed enough to buy some and I was looking forward to seeing how it was maturing.
One sniff and I knew I was going to love the wine, sweet cherry, a hint of musk, blackberry, chocolate and all sorts of other aromas, very complex and inviting. The plate is no disappointment either, if anything its shows more complexity of flavour than the bouquet suggests; sweet cherry attack with an underlying blanket of chocolate and savoury dill/tobacco/cedar pencil shaving tastes together with mocha and blackberry that literally fills the entire mouth and lasts and lasts. Tannins are bountiful, fine grained and drying, the acid unobtrusive and the fruit clean, clear and deeply seated. ItÂ’s muscular in weight but has a level of refinement too. Rated as Excellent, it doesnÂ’t seem to have changed much since I first tried it and is still yummo!
However I still thought enough of the 01 wines to buy a six pack and Anders doesn't have the opportunity to buy the 99 so its an academic argument to him.
Ric,
Can't argue 99 being a longer life vintage as compared to the hot & riped 2001 (only time will tell) but upon release most mid-range '01 seems to delivered more "grunt" even though most of the Barossa Icons(ie.Meschach, Command, Stonewell, Oaktavius, E&E) hasnt been release yet. My Barossa wine of the vintage '01 so far is the Gibson O'Vines. Try it, u will go bonkers
p/s. Even the humble Christa/Rolf Shz Grenache 2001 seems to delivered more pleasure than both the JJ Hahn fr the same vintage.

Gary,
Thats a worry, we agree on something.

Martin,
Totally and absolutely disagree with all of the above.
Firstly here is my TN on the 01 Christina Rolf.
Veritas 2001 Christina Rolf (60% Shiraz and 40% Grenache) retails for $20 at cellar door. Sweet Grenache fruit dominates the nose with chocolate from the Shiraz underpinning the aroma. On the palate there are enough earthy tannins to make the wine interesting and provides a good mouth feel. The sweet upfront fruit that moves into the chocolate spectrum on the finish will ensure that this wine goes well with food. Perfect to drink now, it's rated as Recommended with *** for value.
This wine is not in the same class the 01 vintage of the JJ Hahn Shiraz.
Point 2, just because a wine has "more grunt" doesn't make it better. What the hell has "grunt" got to do with quality anyway? Many of the 01's that I have tried exhibit stewed fruit characters and will not age at all well. A hot vintage does not produce great wine and 01 was one of the hottest on record in SA.

In terms of where I have put my money, here is a list of purchase by vintage.
1996 - 577
1997 - 166
1998 - 759
1999 - 361
2000 - 158
2001 - 242
Interestingly enough, most of 01's came from the regular buy list, cooler areas or the super value wines like:-
Cullen
Burge Family
Eden Springs
Elderton
Jaspers
Kays
Kurtz
Majella
Noons
Paxtons
Petaluma
Plantagnet
Rockford
Thorn Clarke
Tim Adams
Turkey Flat
Rockford
Veritas
Dutschke
Wendouree
I doubt I will be purchasing many more SA 01's as many of them are just to much into the prune spectrum or stewed to much for my liking.
