2000 Chapoutier Ermitage Blanc "De l Oree"- Old Vine Marsanne aged in oak. 113 euros.
Honey, floral&truffle aromas roll onto a very rich minerally palate with hints of vanillan oak. There is good length and an unusual finesse to the wine. Should evolve into a honey and spiced fruits wonder. 100pts Parker.
Ermitage Le Pavillon 2000-Old Shiraz vines. 143 euros.
Restrained but exotic blackfruits, licorice&blackpepper. The palate a layer of licorice, minerals and smokey flavours(not char). Big full bodied red with puckering tannin. Lengthy persistance. 99+pts Parker.
Ermitage L' Ermite 2000-After the hour walk to the little Chapel on Hermitage Hill, this wine is endearing. Beautiful view of the township of Hermitage and the Rhone river. Old vine shiraz at the top of the hill. Hill of Grace type romance. 147 euros.
Earthy shiraz nose with the dark spectrum and black pepper. The palate interesting even in it's youthful rawness. Inky or metallic/minerally with meaty flavours with rolling chalky tannin. A big monster at the moment. 99+pts Parker.
Hermitage Blanc "Vin de Paille" 1997-sweet wine from Hermitage Hill. 3500 bottles only. Marsanne. Dried on straw prior to pressing. 105 euros per 375ml.
All class in a glass. Like an ancient Moselle sticky-for nosing not drinking. Honey and exquisite toffee combine to produce a bouquet from Heaven. Glorious palate richness with that amazing finesse of sweetness and acidity that makes most stickys seem now, undrinkable! 99pts Parker.
Rudimentary notes. The bouquets and flavours all new. Exquisite stuff but in my humble view, I would take about 5 points off each on the 100 point scale.
Wine is a beautiful thing!
