1995 Grant Burge Meshach

Opened relaxing at Cradle Mountain, Tas.

Unable to decant as I normally would, so poured into empty wine bottle leaving sediment in original, and then poured directly from bottle into glass.

Huge wine. Almost too huge to be consumed without food. Impenetrable inky colour, brimming with fruit and still substantial oak.

After about an hour, ordered a fillet steak to accompany the wine. Perfect.
Smooth, long, just pure shiraz. Loads of everything. Simple as that.

I have one more, and I think I'll wait another 10 years before opening it. The wine will easily wait that long, and may well get better with some more softening up.

I recently had the 1990 Meshach and to be honest, I think it had passed its use by date in regards to peak drinking. A bit tired although still quite enjoyable.

I still have the 92, 94 and 96 in the cellar and have certainly been eyeing off the 92 for immediate drinking.

Given the reports of the 95 vintage not being so great, I'm not sure that I would hold on to that wine for so long. If you like it so much, have the last bottle during winter , over a steak and an open fireplace.

The 1995 vintage wasn't good across the board, but Oliver gives that Meshach vintage 96 points, versus 93 for the 1990, so obviously Grant Burge bucked the trend.

I'd still be dubious about hanging onto it more than another 5 years or so, though.

I had my 95 Meshach at the end of 2005 and it was inside it's drinking window but with plenty of time left.

Grant Burge said of the 95 Meshach .. It was a bastard of a vintage and the Meshach is a monster of a wine.
