I can think of many Sauternes in this price range which would outperform this wine. I expected much more and didn't get it. This wine can be described by:
"All glitter is not gold"

Talking my friend into buying it was a bad idea and I regret it.

Depends what he paid. There's been a spate of these hitting the market, going back to 1921.
Fine & Rare in London are offering bottles of the 1921 at GBP278 per bottle. Be hard put to find a comparable price among Sauternes for that great year.

Nigel, we both paid around $300 a bottle.
