Beringer Blass and the Copper 'Trial' Riesling

From today's Canberra Times, Chris Shanahan reviews the 2003 Annie's Lane Copper Trail Riesling. "Copper Trail stands above the field in the very good 2003 vintage". At $34 to $36 a bottle, it oughta be pretty darn good, hold on, make that absolutely freakin' fantastic. Has anyone out there seen or tried it? Is this a first release of another new super-premium Riesling? Or is Beringer Blass just market pitching against the likes of Grosset and Leonay? Looks suspiciously like it to me.

Would be interested to hear from anybody who can fill me in on this one.

Pretty sure this has been around for a few vintages now David. It is their premium Riesling as I understand, and I have seen good reviews of past vintages although have not tasted it myself.

yep been around for a while. Sourced from two vineyards (Carlsfield & Polish Hill). 2002 was pretty good and got rave reviews from Halliday. Pretty sure in the past Beringer used to release both these wines as 'single vineyard' wines but not under the Annies Lane banner.

I bought the regular Annie's Lane Riesling (2002) after it was touted in theLos Angeles Times. Seems to me it was US$12.99 and rated 89 by Wine Spectator.

It is/was very enjoyable, drinkable and very food-friendly; terrific at that price-point. I'm sure I'd love the premium version, the Copper Trail a lot even if it gets up to about US$22 - $25 a bottle. Just got to find some.
