Have come accross an old book being Wine Auction Records of Australia,
January to June 1981. It makes interesting reading of the secondary
market 22 years ago. The following are some examples.
Penfolds Grange.
1971 $25.00
1966 $30.00
1962 $45.00
1955 $85.00
Henschke HOG
1978 $4.00
1972 $6.00
1962 $45.00
Mt Edelstone
1978 $6.38
1972 $9.16
1971 $16.66
Wynns BL
1966 $11.00
Mt Pleasant Elizabeth [Then called riesling]
1972 $3.12
Port was very strong with the Yalumba thoroughbred series selling for
sets of 4 at$250.00 and the Para Liqueur 1947,1944, 1939, 1930
selling around the $50.00 mark.
Regards,
Ron.
Trivia.
Most notable being that the 72 Mt Edelstone was 50% pricier than HoG, and those prices for Yalumba! The Para at least is great wine to drink, even if it did reach silly price heights. But the Yalumba isn't even very good to drink - certainly not now. Nasty ruby ports, weren't they? $250 in the early 80s bought you a whole lot of stuff, surely. You could have got a 2nd hand car for that!
And now, set of 4 Yalumba ports ($250)- whatever the horses names - would sell for, what, $20 the lot? As opposed to 3 bottles of 55 Grange ($255), worth $3000 each...
