Thanks Brian. Interesting to note how poorly the 99 Fox Creek Reserve cellars, 18.5 (gold) last year, but deteriorating to 16.75 (Bronze) this year!!

I looked at the results and thought - hey, that's good, I've been recommending the Oomoo shiraz all over the place, and at $11 it's picked up a bronze and beaten off 200 other wines, woo-hoo!

But then I noted that Zilzie have a $10 wine that's picked up a silver (haven't tasted it, has anyone else?)

And that Cella Rage at $12 picked up a gold. Again, has anyone tasted this?

cheers,
Campbell.

The thing I liked most was that they (judges) weren't seduced by the over extracted "Parker" wines.

Variety is the spice of life ....

Not a bad showing, I have stocks of 9 of these. :-)

Anyone else not heard of at least 5 of the wineries?

Are they actively encouraging the smaller makers or are the newer wineries lifting their game in the face of potential extinction?

As Mike said, very few 'Parker' wines here, it would be interesting to see the full entry list.
Cheers

Brian, 2 good points, and possibly for the same reason, the cost of entry. I believe it to be around $250 and 36 bottles of the wine to be reviewed. Perhaps OK if your wine retails for $10 a bottle but can be nasty a bit higher up the pole.

Most of the wines that already have good sales for their wines would not bother entering as they would have everything to lose if they score poorly and little to gain if they score well.

I know that some winmakers are peed off at the thought of their supplying wine for this event only to see it sold to consumers and refuse to supply it for that reason.

Sort of makes the whole thing a bit irrelevent as well when you don't see the likes of Grange, HOG, and etc entered.

Just my 2c

The zilzie is a very good wine for the price...I dont know about the silver medal however their entire range is decent value for money. The Hardy's Oomoo shiraz i'm also glad to see there as i have also recomended it to many customers , most of whom returned and bought cases which is always a good sign. Having it score the same as Fox Creek reserve etc will make a good selling point. It is a very good value Mc Laren Vale shiraz, a steal at $10.

Cheers

Shiraz Challenge

Post by Daryl Douglas »

Hmmm, plenty of wines I've not tried, a few I have though perhaps earlier vintages, some wines known by reputation and discussions/tasting notes on this and similar forums, and quite a few producers unheard of by me. An interesting Challenge. Of course there's no Grange! When was it last (if ever?) exhibited in open competition - one for the new Quizmaster?

Davo makes a good point about the conditions of entry. Not sure I'd like to know about the wines that didn't make the cut. Possibly many more unknowns looking for the spotlight?

Tried a bottle of Oomoo not too long ago @ $13.50 from the local barn, didn't like it much as it seemed all over the place which I thought incongruous with the back-label recommendation that it's meant for current drinking. May get another bottle to check my first impression. Much prefer Rockbare 02 bought for $1.49 more.

Further on the budget wine theme, not surprised to see Taylors Shiraz 02 there. Have had a few bottles of the 01 that were great value when bought for about $14/btl. Have seen a disparaging comment about Taylor's red wines in general recently - maybe that person has a few cases of Annie's Lane Coppertrial 99 to enjoy instead. Must admit to having enjoyed Annie's Lane standard Shiraz in the past but haven't tried Coppertrail. Moondah Brook is also generally good value at it's pricepoint.

Thought about buying a bottle of Plantagenet Omrah just a few days ago but ended up with a TR222 00 just for the memories - GRRRRR!!! - SOUTHMOUNT!!!! Anyway Omrah's a readily available wine from the Challenge that I'll be trying given it's reasonable cost.

Although JH was Chairman of judges (he's consistently rated it's shiraz excellent in recent years) Turkey Flat's reputation among others of those having more knowledgeable palates than mine, the result prompted me to order more! Having followed Halliday's opinions for some time now, the results for some of the better known labels don't surprise.

Haven't ever bought any of Tahbilk's offers of cases of mystery dozens from the Shiraz Challenge but given the number of little/unknown wines in the result, doing so may be a way I can try some of them.

Hmmm

Cheers

Daz,

Grange and HOG are tasted (blind) and scored every year at the Peel Estate Premium Shiraz tasting alongside the likes of Seppelt Great Western, Rockford Basket Press, PL Stonewell, Balmoral, Command, & etc.

Davo, thanks for that interesting info. Are the wines tasted submitted by the producers or purchased commercially, and are the results of Peel's tastings available on the net? Viewing them would I'm sure, help me along my obviously steep learning curve!

Daz,

The wines are purchased. There is a selection panel who reduce the tasting for the day to 14 wines from however many 6 year old shiraz they can locate to go with the 3 constants (Grange, HOG, & Peel) plus 3 Frogs, usually a couple of Guigals such as Brune et Blonde, Cote Rotie or Chateau d'Ampuis, plus La Chapelle or whatever.

The resulting 20 wines are tasted blind in flights of 5. The wines are scored by around 10 of the 100+ tasters present on the day.
