Screwcaps

Post by Ratcatcher »

Once you open a screwcapped bottle is the seal still airtight if you put it back on?

ie: if you opened a screwcap and then put the top back on 2 seconds later could you store the wine for 6-12 months with no adverse affects?

I'm not actually planning on doing this, I'm just curious about how the screwcap works.

Open to being corrected here but I think once you break the seal, that's it. I think they fill the bottle with inert gas prior to putting the top on so once you open it, you let the air in. Of course, if you don't take anything out of the bottle, there's not much room for air to get in but I certainly woldn't be looking at storing for more than a day or two once opened.

On the other hand, once you put the lid back on, what's in will stay in and what's out will stay out but you've let air in and that's the problem.
