TN: modest Müller and Ridge

2003 Egon Müller Scharzhof Riesling (Mosel) [1 04] 11.5% The palest of greeny-straws, the nose here is light, lifted, and though there's a touch of citrus, it more dominated by rose-petal, vaguely pot-pourri aromas. There's a little trademark Mosel acidity, but marrying the great heat of the vintage up with the palate structure I'm inclined to think this is not typical of Muller's branded wine. The wine actually feels slightly oily on the palate, somewhat in the style of Alsace; the crystal clarity of the Mosel is at least moderated; rather like looking through a hazy window. It's very drinkable, though.

1996 Ridge Santa Cruz Cabernet Sauvignon (California) 13.0%
At nearly 10, this is impressively blue-black in colour still. The nose is pure ripe blackcurrant & cassis; powerful and insistent, but not overbearing. Vanillan oak plays a supporting role. The palate is full/medium, very pure and cool, ripe, yet not overly so. Mostly front-mid palate in texture, the finish is long, the tannins softened; all up a very fine wine. Knocks just about any local cabernet under $50 into a cocked hat.

cheers,
Graeme
