1987 Brokenwood Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz (Hunter Valley)
A forgotten bottle in my cellar (yeah, okay, I knew it was there, stuck in a carton with 6 cartons above it in a difficult corner and I far too lazy to get at it for a decade). Stunning cork that is barely saturated. Light red colour with no bricking. Exceptional clarity and condition for age. Bouquet is full on liquorice, blackcurrants, spice, musk, pepper, sweet plums but most of all reminiscent of one of uncorrected grain calfskin belts from Versace! Finishes off with a whiff 13% alcohol. Palate though is a let down and is passed its best. However, still pretty damn good for a supposedly weaker vintage. Wine is spoiled by some abrasive tannins on the finish but still eminently drinkable on the first phase, with medium body and elegant structure.
86/100
