Well here it is. Night before origin II and not working. What do you do. Get the old tasting group together to try some good wine. Sounds a bit like TORB meets Red Bigot somewhere in the NSW highlands. Not really, just a few queenslanders getting together for some red wine.

Opened and decanted about an hour before the event. Smelt a little confectionary on the nose and tasted quite thin without complexity. Became a little porty and was a little flabby in the mouth.

During the next hour it developed more complexity and the oak was more evident but did not overpower.

Certainly far too early to be drinking this wine. It will not be a blockbuster and will probably be better in another 18 months. Certainly drink it by 2009.

Bleasdale Frank Potts Blend 02

This is also too young to be drinking. Always a great blend and certainly the bottle of the night. I initially thought it lacked some length but had to revise this later. If you can find some of this vintage, get it and put it away for a few years and reap the rewards.

Rosemount Mountain Blue Shiraz Cabernet 1997

A $25 clearance this afternoon. A wine to drink while waiting for something else to open up. Didn't have the stink of Mudgee mud that I have found of this wine in the past. No funky smells or flavours, just a good blend from a vintage that has been identified as one of the poor ones. Very enjoyable.

Rothbury Forefathers Liqueur Muscat

This is a bottle that my better half lays claim to. Do not touch it and if you are offered a taste of pure heaven, take it and enjoy. You have to be good to be offered a second taste.

Doesn't sound like the same quality as the Shiraz. The '03 Shiraz I tasted was a powerful wine, very much in the Kalleske style.

I actually preferred the 04 Red Nectar Cabernet to the Shiraz. Thought it had good fruit weight and good Cabernet definition for a Barossa Cabernet.

I must try another soon to confirm my initial thoughts.
