Does anyone know how to get on the mailing lists of Mount Marry and Bass Philips? I have been trying for more than 3 years now, but none of them ever replied.
I know mount mary is not open to public, but if I ring them would they allow me to visit the vinyard? Does anyone know?

Hey Rob - wasn't aware that Phillip Jones' mailing list was closed - he can be damn hard to pin down or to return phone calls, but persistence usuallly wins out, try emailing Phil on bpwines@tpg.com.au or faxing on 03 5664 3209. Also, Liquid Assets in Nicholson st Abbotsford (Melbourne) put on annual tastings with Phil in charge, they should let you know when the next one is.
Mount Mary (Dr John Middleton) is most unlikely to let you visit, he keeps a pretty tight rein even on the long-standing members. Best approach may be a personal letter stating that you've loved his wines, would very much appreciate getting on his mailing list, (even with limited allocations) and fully understand that there may be a fair wait involved.

Yes, it's funny how things work out. One of the first mailing lists I joined was Mount Mary, in mid 98, in time for the release of the 96 reds. Just rang up, and got on the list. It must have been just about the time they closed it. I bought wine every year since (heavily limited as it was), except last year, which was expensive due to weddings and so forth - but I sent them a letter explaining the circumstances and hope they'll keep me on the full list this year.
They did establish a mailer for those on the waiting list - essentially you got a bite at any whites left over after the regulars had their feed. This was, I think, a response to several difficult, low-yield vintages, and an attempt to foster links with future buyers. I seem to remember the Doctor mentioning that new plantings were helping to ameliorate the chronic shortage of wine they've been having.
Anyway, I'll look forward to the new mailer, especially now that I've maneged to persuade my wife that a few bottles at $80+ isn't excessive...

I just asked Dr Middletons brother about getting on the mailing list today. Luckily for me he said it would be ok as long as i do buy..no danger there!! From what Jim said the mailing list is full but the good Doctor does make some exceptions...if you are passionate enough you do have a chance of getting on the list in some limited fashion so draft a letter is my advice.

Back in 1999 I did a huge snail mail-out to a host of wineries including Bass Phillip, Wendouree, Giaconda, Yeringberg, Jasper Hill, and Bindi. Got on all the lists with no dramas. A letter would serve best for Bass Phillip as I think that Phillip Jones isn't exactly technology oriented.
As for Mount Mary, I was visiting friends in Perth and had dinner at Altos. I ordered a "nice" bottle of red ('97 Quintet) and the owner, Sam Scaffidi, was sufficiently impressed so as to start up a conversation. As it turned out, he had a good friend who had just landed the assistant winemaker's job at Mount Mary and would put in a "good word" for me. The rest, as they say, is history. Right place at the right time.
