TN: 2000 Viking Pinot Noir

Post by Adair »

2000 Viking Pinot Noir - Marananga, Barossa Valley, SA - $25CD (in 2001)

This wine is made from Pinot Noir vines adjacent to the Viking Estate, made by Tord and Charmaine Soderstrom's son, whose name I have forgotten. Most would know this winery more for its "Grand" Shiraz.

This was my second and last bottle consumed last night, the first consumed on release in 2001.

Deeply coloured, still with purple tinges. Full of very ripe, sweet, black cherries with a little lightly candied sweet ripe strawberries, sweet and slightly musky spices, and with hints of stalk and sap. Broad, intense, luscious, smooth and silky. Very little acid and even less tannin, but this gives just enough control to the wine. There is little notion of a back palate but the size of the front and middle make up for much of this, although, as a consequence, length is nothing more than adequate. Although there is little Pinot Noir style in this wine, it still shows a great deal of class in a New World way. This wine gives more pleasure than its 17/20, 90/100 rating might convey. This Pinot Noir is a classy wine and a great experience. Consequently, this bottle was finished remarkably quick.

Interestingly, Jono was still able to pick the wine as Pinot Noir, although was looking more to a warm Melbourne dress-circle vineyard than SA.

Kind regards,
Adair

In the early days Rolf Binder used to blend this Pinot with their Shiraz.

Charmaine Soderstrom's son who made the 2000 Viking Pinot Noir is Corey Chaplin, he used to work for Rockford and now has his own label.

Guest,

Thank you for the information. It definitely showed more class than a kid having a go with a bunch of grapes. (Yet another Rockford derived wine that I like. :))

However, I don't know of and can't find the Corey Chaplin wine label.

Kind regards,
Adair
