TN: Wynns BL 1996

This was drunk with a 1990, 1991, 1994 & 1999(among others) at dinner on Saturday. Originally tasted on opening, allowed to breath, drunk and "control glass" retained for about 3 hours.

Classic Coonawarra nose with not fully integrated oak. Some vanilla overtones but not "heavy" and cedar noticeable. Excellent length and estimate 2-3 years further development and improvement - and then will hold for at least 5 (probably more) years. Note this bottle came from Wynns directly to my cellar.

1990 considered at baby Chickpea's.

1991 best BL for current drinking and beautifully : very good advertisement for Conawarra - and unarguably one of the vfm bargains worldwide at its pricepoint.

1994 certainly in window but will hold for some time: lacking next to 91 but very good wine otherwise

1999 too young but expect this to develop in similar fashion to 91 (albeit not quite as good) as it will always lack a bit of depth which will reflect in its complexity.


1998 not opened as general view is that it needs another 3 years based on last tasting.

Also drunk: Pol Roger n/v, vintage 1996, 1983 Lindemans bin 6600, Tollana TR16 vintages 1993, 1994, 1998 and XO Chabot armagnac - relaxing saturday evening which took its toll on golf that followed....

I also tried a 96 B/L, bloody corks. The second one was just as Fred described, most enjoyable.
