1984 Penfolds Bin 707 Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon
Brick red with mid red centre. Good clarity. Nose is quite reticent at first then after 40 minutes: black cherries, caramel, vanilla (oak but not prominent) and smoky capsicum. Very good. Palate had good texture albeit is slightly oak-driven throughout the full range of the palate. Good length but should be far better. Full wine and drinking well. Held up in glass for 24 hours with little diminishment. No need to keep it any longer. Much better than the vintage suggests but solid rather than seductive or special.
87/100

Thanks for the note. I bought a great many of the excellent 1984 Coonawarra Cabs but didn't buy the 1984 Bin 707 so it probably didn't impress at release. Then again the adage about old bottles is very true.
