TN: 2004 Red Nectar Shiraz

Hello

Please note, this is a tasting note from the auswine panel, and I sell this wine, simply a caveat.

Produced from small, flavoursome berries, this classic Barossa Shiraz was fermented warm, in a small open top fermenter. After gentle basket pressing, fermentation was completed in barrel. A year's maturation in American oak hogsheads has resulted in a complex, full bodied Shiraz that with careful cellaring will age gracefully.

Deep purple colour with red tints, this has a powerful nose full of blackberries and cream, ripe fruit, liquorice, chocolate and much more, with a slightly spicy twist, tempting as hell! The palate does not disappoint, it has great persistence, loads of flavour, all blackberries and plums, crammed full of chocolate accented fruit, but not a fruit bomb in any sense, firm powdery tannins on the long finish give a slightly 'savoury' edge, balancing the opulent fruit. I was at that Auswine panel when this was tried (blind as usual) and this was impresive wine, particularly at the price point.

Has the stamp of great viticulture and winemaking. I'm increasingly finding that great viticulture is the key to our best reds.

My caveat is that I'm buying some!!

I've posted on the 2003 Red Nectar Shiraz earlier, and if the 2004 is anywhere near the same quality it will be excellent value.

Excellent value in Oz anyway. The 2003 is going for between $70-80USD here. And its still being called the Kalleske Red Nectar. That can only be because that is how Robert Parker Jr. described the wine in the WA. I imagine it would be just too confusing to the point chasers to have the wine described as Red Nectar Shiraz (Winemaker Troy Kalleske) 94-96 Points Wine Advocate.

The interesting thing is that the real deal, the 2003 Kalleske Greenock Shiraz, goes for about $100USD.

I've been asking Gavin about both the Red Nectar 2004 Shiraz and Cabernet for weeks. $25AUD pb! My order went in yesterday!

I forgot to add that I've tried the Red Nectar Cabernet on two occasions and rated it excellent. Don't miss trying this wine in the rush for the Shiraz.

Totally agree Steve. I thought when we had the Red Nectar Cab with Troy earlier this month, that it was a great example of Barossa Cabernet. I just wish Troy would bring out a Greenock Cab to compliment his wonderful Shiraz!

Gavin, not sure if you can do this?

I'd suggest anyone buying Red Nectar Shiraz and unsure about the Cabernet should get one of their Shiraz bottles replaced with a Cabernet to try. You can replace the Shiraz bottle when you subsequently order the Cabernet which I'm sure you'll do, it's a great wine.
