TN: 2002 Tyrell's Vat 47 Chardonnay

Yes folks, this is not a glitch on the forum, this is 707 posting a TN on a white wine....and it has to be bloody special for me to do so!

About 0.5% of my cellar is white, I rarely drink the stuff, mainly when dining with friends who want to start with something not worth drinking.

The Tyrells Vat 47 had me going back for a second glass, this is a red drinkers Chardonnay. It had complex flavours in the peach spectrum with tight structure, lovely silky mouthfeel with a crisp finish. I believe this line ages well and would think this vintage would be a certainty to cellar.

And as his punishment he should be 'sent down' to a cellar full of old and great red wines without a corkscrew (no Stelvins in the cellar either.) That will learn him. BTW, Steve as a rb you are allowed one lapse a year but to talk about it in public without shame; oh the shame of it all

Thanks for the encouraging note, I just picked up a bottle of this on sale in Canada for $35 CAD (all gone now, unfortunately). I've enjoyed previous vintages I've tried of this wine.

Brian, I'll pass on the Leasingham Chardy, one white a year is enough, that's why when I do it, I always make it the best and the 2002 Vat 47 could certainly be that.

GW, if we settled Australia again we wouldn't grow grapes in the Hunter, I reckon it would make a great hot coal mine!

Brian, I'll pass on the Leasingham Chardy, one white a year is enough, that's why when I do it, I always make it the best and the 2002 Vat 47 could certainly be that.

Actually for that matter, does Leasingham even make a Chardonnay?? If not I guess that's one more reason to like them!

No doubt as you're out of the closet now, you'll try one at the next Blacktongues chardonnay tastings! (if not beforehand) Now where are those photos again...

Now to further taint my reputation, yesterday I went out of my way to source a certain tiny production 2002 Adelaide Hills Pinot as recommended by Davo. Drank the whole bottle, minus a half glass I left to air overnight, great wine, in the same class as Ashton Hills and Barrett.

I'll actually be adding some of this Pinot to my collection which now totals around 15 bottles.

I won't mention the new discovery's name lest it disappear from shelves before I get there. It's amazing that it's made by one of the Barossa's shining lights - David Powell from Torbreck!
