Wine loving Sportsmen/ personalities

Guy and gals,

Need a bit of help for an upcoming project. Are there any notable sportsmen and/or personalities who are winelovers/collectors of wine?

I've got all the golfers covered, and also Stu Macgill, but no idea outside of that.

I know of a money loving sportman, Greg Norman. He lend his name to almost anything he can think of...

Try some back issues of Wine mag as I remember seeing an interview with one of the wallabies (John Eales maybe) and he mentioned how he and several of his team mates love wine.

Phil Kearns is reasonably well known for his love of wine.
Warney had his double-chin because of wine (see a previous post).
I think The Big Easy has his own label as well.

AGT Wine Magazine run a regular monthly column involving celebraties and their cellars, more often than not a sportsperson.

Mortimers of Orange is run by an ex-rugby or ex-league player - these NSWegian sports are all the same to me.

I also remember John Eales being quoted in a wine mag about his passion for the stuff.

The same one also had quotes from Dennis Lillee (about being a one-eyed red lover until he tried an aged Leonay that blew his mind), and Rod Marsh. I'm sure I've got it around somewhere, and have to dig up the quotes for this thread.

Neil Diamond just drank the Adelaide Hyatt out of Nine Popes and asked for and received a magnum of the 2002 from the winery over the weekend.

Johnny Depp - If my memory is working properly when he was interviewed on Oprah she had a bottle of Petrus supplied for the occasion! Check it out here. A couple of the pics show the bottle and two glasses and the text talks (briefly) about him liking wine.

How about Leonard French - well respected Australian artist - used own part of a Victorian winery in the 80s (can never remember which one) - there was a great quote from his wife along the lines of "it would have been cheaper if he had had a mistress."

Daryl Sommers and Rob Sitch are names I've also heard

Eddie McGuire has about half the stock of 98 Grange ever made another one of the reasons for the super high prices that vintage is commanding already.

Pretty sure it was what is now known as Huntleigh Estate in Heathcote.

We went to a Veritas dinner at the Wharf last year and there were quite a few rugby players and cricketers there. Muscat Mike was there with me and would probably remember better than me. I'm pretty sure Phil Kearns was one and Tony Greig might have been another.

I can also definitely confirm that Darryl Somers is a keen buyer at least. I can remember somehow seeing a buying list online after a Langton's auction. Must have been one of the very first online auctions when I clicked on results, it had not only what everything sold for but who bought it. Darryl had bought a substantial amount. I remember seeing quite a few forum regulars and one of my friends (not a forumite) on the list too and wondering about Langtons' security and privacy. At that one auction alone he'd bought around 12 grands worth.

Then there's that guy in the American band (Green Day?) that bought the Grange magnum or impreial or something for the world record price.

The comment was to say that I forgot about rugby players- well cultured, generally well educated, exposed to a world where wine is more common, hence the association. Nothing more.

That'd be Maynard James Keenan from the band Tool and A Perfect Circle. He's an established collector of Grange, owns a Napa vineyard, and (I think) a restaurant too. Good to see some rock stars with their heads in the right place.
