Is there any recent taste notes on the 1998 Limited Release Shiraz Cabernet? Is it holding up better than alot of other 98s?

Cheers

A ripe but savoury fruit intense bouquet with wonderful complexity, earthy notes, chocolate, black fruits and the hint of menthol that first appeared on opening and turned into nose clearing proportions as the wine opened up; add to that a touch of spice an cinnamon. Intensely savoury on the palate, there was also an underlying supporting layer of subtle sweetness, black berry fruits, a subtle grind of pepper (unusual for a Barossa Cabernet) chocolate, mint and tobacco leaf, the power for an ample weight wine is formidable. Rated as Highly Recommended, this wine is still a babe and will only get better with another few years.

SALTRAMS MAMRE is a better wine at half the price.98 and 02 are great. They get better fruit than they deserve

Petaluma,

Sorry, I have just noticed your request was for the 98 Blend, the tasting notes I posted was for the Limited Release Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon.

I have not try the wine in question since 2002.

Disagree!

Having had both of them, IMO the Limited Blend is better. As far as the Mamre is concerned, the 96 is better than both the 98 and the 02. And why do "they get better fruit than they deserve?" That statements makes no sense.

I drank this early last year and I thought it's well integrated and very approacable. Not sure about the staying power but if u like ur wine with some "grip" and intensity better drink up.

For the best Shiraz/Cab blend in AU, go for Kaesler Weapon of Mass Seduction 2002. This wine is massive and built to last. Easily 10-15years is my lofty estimate.

The quility that goes into MAMRE is not what normally goes into a wine of that price,Huge recources and no top end market make it a steal

Mamre is made by Beringer Blass and the grapes that go into this wine could go into any wine in their entire portfolio, should they choose to do so.

Martin,

Grip and intensity or two mutually exclusive qualities of a wine. It is perfectly possible to have one without the other. Some grip is obviously desirable, otherwise the wine is flaccid; however as wines are becoming more "user-friendly" with more approachable tannins, they can have backbone, but they don't need a huge amount of grip to last.

As far as the WOMS is concerned, I agree it is a fantastic wine but not all wines have to be this massive to last 10 to 15 years.
