Didn't read the article other than the headline paragraph on your site. The trouble with Syrah in California, (& Washington and Oregon for that matter) is that it appears the winemakers aren't sure if they want Aussie characteristics or a more Rhone-ish style. In the end, it seems to be somewhere in the middle and ends up being fairly insipid and bland.
