Hi all,
Not being a fan of high alcohol '02 Barossa Shiraz I was pleasantly surprised by Auswine's recent cleanskin offer. Cleanskins can be hit and miss but the panel's tasting notes (refer e-letter this week) were an accurate reflection of this wine. 70+ year old vines from northern end of the Barossa the colour was black (and I mean jet black) with crimson edges. A tight nose led to a noticeably well crafted wine with all those flavours of Barossa shiraz we love. Fruit quality and winemaking were in the $30+ bracket. Good balance and not hot at 14.7%. Well integrated quality oak and powdery tannins add to a wine that is excellent value at $15 pb. In TORB's jargon IMO Highly Recommended and **** for value.

We tried some of this at Gavins the other weekend, very nice. While we were there Troy Kalleske dropped some of his latest 2003 Clarrys Red in (as well as another bottle of something not yet released that Gavin was not willing to share ) and it was a toss up between the Auswine cleanskin and the Kalleske Clarrys red.
Cheers

Looks like he needs a visit from some less friendly types to assist him in easing out the cork. I know just the crew!
2003 Johann Georg Shiraz from Kalleske
I don't like your chances!

Now I have enough of my own unlabelled "Black Dog" wines to drink without buying more unlabelled wine but this 2003 Barossa Shiraz from Auswine really impressed at home last night whilst I was watching Fox by myself.
Very dark in the glass, the nose is full of dark fruits, licorice and dark chocolate, the palate is complex with all these flavours fighting for supremacy and just a touch of spice. Good tannin structure and very long. This is classy wine, really good Barossa Shiraz that at $15 is definitely under half price.
I wished there was someone else to share it with as the dog didnÂ’t seem to care about my comments! I drank the whole bottle which didn't assist in getting out of bed this morning either!
Expect an order from me very soon Gavin.

If you can see through it, it's not worth drinking!
