2000 Recanati Reserve Cabernet Merlot

Post by Adair »

2000 Recanati Reserve Cabernet Merlot – Galilee, Israel

Upon opening: Deep red showing a little age. Hints of menthol on the nose. Tar, salt, savoury, plums and ripe red cherries with very good intensity and excellent power, presence and palate weigh. There is also a touch of iodine. Abundant, powerful, dusty, chalky tannins fill the whole palate, but are in balance, and enable the wine to end long. Being picky, it loses a little power on the back palate. A very complex wine of good power and great structure. 18/20.

After 2-3 hours: Much of the fruit is gone leaving Cabernet bitterness especially on the middle and back palate. Confusing and very disappointing. 15/20.

Despite the very disappointing finish of this wine, it showed that world class wine can be produced in Israel.

Good note that reflects my memory of it.

Did fall away with time, but was fascinating early, especially the nose.

Fascinating wine.

It definitely was. I picked it as Northern Rhone to start, then it changed and changed again. A great way to start an evening (in the red wine capital of the world, that is :-)) and a marvellous options wine.
