That WAS interesting!

Most of the trophys shared by just a few wines. Hmmm.
Mainly not too pricey stuff, too. I guess that not as many expensive wines entered?

Is the Greg Norman actually sold here, or is it all sent to the USA?

cheers

Some very strange results. Class 57 is interesting, QLD, Morninton Pen. and Griffith shiraz at the top, Brokenwood Graveyard Shiraz 2003 at the bottom.

Sydney is seen as a strange wine show by many winemakers.

Its held early in the year, when it can still be very hot and humid. Regional ( read Hunter) wine styles do better...thats based on the Chairman setting the style parameters.

I'm not surprised they think the best wines in class 58 are from Griffith Mornington and Queensland. That soft prematurely aged (read brown porty and very sweet fruit) is all the rage in some show circles.

Its not what serious red wine drinkers want....but no-ones listening to us at the moment! Never mind!

Just treat show medals with great caution till the fad fades.

Cheers

I can't agree more on the medals part...

The more I look the more I find of non-medal wines that I quite like and/or have already bought, I'll take Sydney medals on a wine with a good deal of scepticism, many of the bigger styles I like that have proven cellaring potential missed out on medals. I always knew I was in a significant minority, but some of these results are ridiculous.

Life's too short to drink white wine and red wine is better for you too! :-)

Don't judges have guilt feeling of choosing Sacred Hill as a best red under $20?
I walk into a bottle shop who had this wine for a tasting with a big sign "winner of sydney royal wine show of best red under $20" and the bottleshop manager laughed and saying it is a ridiculous that this wine won best red under $20.

Looks like the organiser doesn't really care which wine wins as long as they make money by hosting the show. Apparently, $600 per bottle to enter!
