I tried another bottle of the 1999 Pinot tonight over several hours and was extremely impressed.
In fact, I think my last bottle must have had some bottle variation because I recall referring to this Pinot as a short drinking window vintage. Anyway, my tasting notes from tonight are as follows:
Color: A beautiful crystal ruby red, with just the slightest bricking on the edges. I love looking at wines with this color. It just suggests class.
Nose: This wine was like a rose bush inside your house. Powerful rose petals, strawberries, sweet plums, but still retaining that spiciness that Pinots are renowed for. There was pepper and green herbs underneath, that added depth to this wine.
Taste: Just luscious, is the best description. Smooth, silky and stylish. You know, Pinot either has it or it doesn't, and this 1999 Curly Flat has it. An elegant wine with a subtle front palate of berries, jam, slight licorice and chocolate. I don't think it will improve much further, but WOW, it is just drinking wonderfully right now. I think you can expect 2-3 yrs at this level. The aftertaste is long, tight, structured and enjoyable, so for $44 CD, I tip my hat to the winemakers.
