Upside down storage

Hi guys
Does anyone have an opinion of the relative merits (or otherwise) of storage of wines flat vs. upside down?

Issue has arisen as I have recently moved storage facilities and my new locker requires some "standing up" boxes.

Is this bad? Can the corks get "too moist"?

Interested in your thoughts.

Only problem I can think of is too much pressure on the neck of bottles causing breakage, should you stack several cartons on top.

I've been storing wines upside down for a lot of years, stacks up to seven high without problems either of glass failure or cork failure, the latter no worse than storing on the side.

You do have to accept that the crust will form in the neck rather than on the side which leaves a plug of viscous crap to overcome. What I do when I finally retrieve the carton is to give the individual bottles a mild shaking at 45 degrees to get the bulk of it out of the neck then give the bottle a couple of days to settle. On pulling the cork I try and wipe out any residue in the neck with a paper towel. Seems to work for me.

Slight confusion here! I'm trying to visualize what would require a box to be stored upside down. I know most aren't square, but you can't rotate it through 90 degrees and put the box on its side? Or just get get a few smaller sized (6 pack) cartons.

I'll try to explain.....the boxes are the rectangular ones. One bottle high, Two bottles wide and 6 bottles long.
Lying them flat is fine for the bulk of the container but I am left with about 30cm at the front of the container whcih will not accomodate a lied down box. The only option therefore is to stack them...
As for the few smaller six pack cartons that is an option.
