Mike,
How has your coravin been going? I was following people's progress on them in the forums but that stuff has died down a lot and people talk about it a lot less (although more people seem to have one). It must be working out ok.
I know some people have had issues with it but part of that must also be how they're doing it.
Planning to get one once I move...in AU I just have far too many wines with screwcap and the ones that I don't I tend to have slotted for full consumption....Already my buying is shifting a bit but I think it would make a huge shift with Coravin....hoping for a Champers one at some point....
Still going well. I've got a handful of bottles from the early 90s as my experiment wines. I have a glass every few months, and most are exactly the same as when first opened. One Wynns Riddoch seems a little less vibrant. I'm a fan
i stand them up initially so no wine leaks out then you can lay them back down once the cork has had to time to seal. Ive found no noticeable difference over 5 months in the wines that were stood up as i'd have a glass every month minimum to check its progress. If you were looking at taking a glass or so from a bottle and leaving it for 2 yrs (if it would last that long) then yes you'd want to lay it down.
Ive had it 5 months, i guess the longer i use it the better i'll understand if you really can take a glass and lay a bottle back in the fridge and it last 2yrs. I believe the ageing process is expected to continue and you can reproach a bottle in 2yrs. My experience shows older Oz bottles (Turkey Flat 02 & Wendouree Cabernet 98') begin oxidising after 6-8 wks.

5 odd years have passed since these posts - are you still happy with your Coravin's? any tips or tricks you can share?
Well they do screwcaps now, so no reason not to use one if that is how you drink your wines (i.e not all at once)
I have one which I got cheap through the WSG and it has been great for me. But yeah the Capsules are exxy if you start getting low on the bottle it is best to just finish it off rather than try and fill the whole empty space.
I also grabbed a Pelican type case and made a kit out of it so I don't lose all the bits and pieces and that is holding up so far!

Wow, I did not know that ... I can't really picture how that can work (I will ask the google).
For me, I still find if you put the bottle in the fridge after opening most wines I drink will keep fine for 2-3 days and that is enough for me to be able to not finish things right away and also have a variety of stuff open at any given time. And if I waste a little bit every now and then, so be it.
Longest I’ve left a bottle is 3 years and it was good not great. I think the sweet spot is up to 6 months but there’s nothing stopping you from going longer.
The screw cap is a good idea, but the wine is exposed to oxygen for a few seconds. I use it for rizza for up to a few months.

Thanks Mike, I have now been using one on and off for about 2-3 years and have been very happy. I have some screw caps but not used any, I usually extract half a bottle, I usually open it for the second half within a month
