Decanter magazine: boy, it's on the ball ain't it!

In the most recent edition of Decanter magazine, February 2005, under the heading "NEW FACES: The next generation of Victorian winemakers", is a list of NEW producers that includes: Bass Phillip, Dalwhinnie, Diamond Valley, Giaconda, Jasper Hill, TarraWarra and, most magnificently of all, Yarra Yering.

What I am trying to figure out is whether that list of NEW FACES is ten years out of date, or 20 years out of date. I just can't make up my mind.

Looking forward to their SA article exposing Queltaler, Ryecroft, Wetherall and that little gem Trennert.

Don't think I'll change my sole subscription from Winefront Monthly to Decanter just yet though....

Mind you, this comes from the magazine that, on the front cover, calls itself, of itself, "The World's Best Wine Magazine". Never have much faith in anyone who makes such a statement about themselves.

Considering the bulk of Australian wine is at around $4.11p/L in the U.K (and dropping)., this is a push to raise the profile of Australian wine above the bulk/supermarket arena.....we have proven that we can produce cheap, oceans of wine from a great 'terrior' called South East Australia.....maybe telling them that there are other wines besides Jacobs Creek is a wise move....the Barossa article recently concentrating on small producers is heading the same way. If we don't we will lose a large chunk of margin share and we are stuffed.

I want to stick up for Decanter. I buy this each month, along with Wine International (UK) and Wine Spectator (US).

I find the 2 UK magazines a really good read. Down to earth writing, in a friendly format, rather than Wine Spectator, where the writers seem to "write at you" rather than "write to you".
