Wines to Swap / Trade
As I'm going through my cellar doing a stocktake, I was wondering if anyone has swapped wine with anyone before?
I've never sold any bottles but thought a group of like minded people might be able to create a marketplace of wines for trade.
Just list what you have and someone can make an offer. It's not about the $ but maybe getting access to different wines.
Dave and I once swapped a bottle of Wendouree - Shiraz for Cabernet as I missed out on shiraz that year. Looking back on it we both got something we didn't have.
Just a thought

I appreciate all forms of alcohol, as long as its wine.

Obviously I can't participate since I am an ocean away in Canada, but it is a good idea, especially for those with multiple bottles in the cellar.

I think out of respect to our gracious host Gavin, you're right to focus on swaps rather than sales / purchases.
Re: Wines to Swap / Trade
Agree, and without a liquor license, selling wine is difficult.

Re: Wines to Swap / Trade
I’ve swapped a few bottles with folks of the forums. Been helped out a few times and tried to reciprocate generously.
It’s a bit hard to make everyone happy. I cellar my wines perfectly and shun anything but. Helps me narrow down faults and I always see replacement of 20 year plus wines from wineries if taint.
I’ve a lot of foreign wines and get a few offers here and there for swaps. Mascarello for Clonakilla etc. Hard to make a fair swap in so many ways.
Another factor can be low value of many Australian wines on secondary markets anyways?
So although I’d be interested but hard to make it work from my end .

I don't think I've ever sold a bottle of wine. I was offered C$250 a bottle for a pair of 1982 Sassicaia when it was all the rage but declined despite having paid only C$26 each.Ian S wrote:I think out of respect to our gracious host Gavin, you're right to focus on swaps rather than sales / purchases.
The only trade I recall making, based on the original retail price, was giving up 3 bottles of 1980 Lynch Bages for a single bottle of 1981 Ducru-Beaucallou. I began to doubt the wisdom of that trade when I opened my last bottle of the '80 Lynch-Bages sometime in late 2000s.
Interestingly enough I still have the pair of Sassicaias and the Ducru-Beaucaillou.
Re: Wines to Swap / Trade
I would certainly entertain the idea, perhaps a swap meet can be the precursor to an offline

I have numerous times with likeminded people I know and trust. As Jamie touched on, issues like wines with higher and or perceived value, age, provenance, scarcity etc, swapping wines 'could' be problematic, but as long as the participants are 'willing', I do not see an issue.Croquet King wrote: I was wondering if anyone has swapped wine with anyone before?
Liquor licensing is certainly a barrier for a wider market/public offering.
Last year I did a cellar 'clean out' and sent 12 dozen to auction, was happy with my decision.

Re: Wines to Swap / Trade
Just to clarify - I never meant to sell or exchange $.
It was only to swap wines with other like minded people.
When doing my stocktake I realised I'd incorrectly added something to my cellar, resulting in an "extra" 6 bottles of the 2018 disgorged Rockford Black Shiraz. I picked up the extra from someone who didn't want them at the time.
Now a good friend has a very good and deep cellar and was after some of the black shiraz. So I said I'll put 4 on the table for a swap.
He hasn't come back with anything yet. He can see my cellar in CT so I said find me something I don't have.
That's what started this thread.
We aren't trading high priced wines and volumes are small.

Hi CK
It does sound great and for clarification that's very much what I thought you were suggesting.

Sending excess wine off to auction can see losses. Swapping can make sense ( as long as dealing with reasonable people )
