January 2021 Purchases

Post by Scotty vino »

3 X 2020 Turon Chardonnay.
3 X 2018 Turon Syrah
2 X 2019 Turon LTD Pinot
6 X 2018 Protero Ade hills (Gumeracha) Nebb.

Did a tasting with Turon at Turon wines in his wine making shed.
No cellar door yet but soon.
Had a good chin wag he's a super bloke doing some great things.
Managed to save his winery during last years bush fires but came very close to losing it.
Some pretty harrowing tales.

Had a bit of a minor disaster over Christmas - got a bit lazy with the cellar arrangement and had quite a few stacks of cardboard boxes, several of which collapsed at some point during December, resulting in 40-50 bottles spending a week or two on the floor. Fortunately, only one casualty (a bottle of Tyrrell's Old Hut), but this did encourage me to invest in some new racking. As a result, I've realised I'm a little shorter on cellar space than I thought, so I'll be cutting down the purchases (as opposed to increasing the drinking!) over the next few months.

That said, couldn't resist a few offers that came my recently:

3 x Tardieu Laurent Becs Fins Cotes du Rhone 2017
3 x Meurgey-Croses Macon-Uchizy 2019
2 x Muraje Lasu 2018 (a winery in Carema)
3 x Vieux Donjon CNDP 2018

All but the last will probably spend their short lives in the garage as opposed to the cellar (not a sentence I'm proud of).

An order from a UK chain (not a common thing for me)... but the Rijckaert wines a nice surprise to find on their list, as we stayed there overnight on the way to Italy. A shame they'd sold out of the Pouilly-Fuisse.

2 Vouvray Domaine des Aubuisières 2019 Cuvée de Perruches, Bernard Fouquet
1 Peter Lehmann Masters 'Margaret' Semillon 2012, Barossa Valley (despite a disappointed CT note from a forumite - I still fancied giving it a go)
2 Viré-Clessé 'Haute Cuvée' 2019 Domaine Rijckaert, Burgundy
2 Saint Véran 'Haute Cuvée' 2018 Domaine Rijckaert, Burgundy
1 "Sur le Marne" Chardonnay Domaine Rijckaert, Cotes de Jura
2 Selvapiana Chianti Rufina Riserva 2017, Italy (appears to be a different wine to the Bucerchiale and sporting a Torraccino label, but clearly Selvapiana)
1 Thymiopolous Xinomavro 2018

I'd made a new year resolution that I'll buy only one bottle a month. :!:

My first purchase for January, yes for the entire month, is Sergio Zenato Amarone Riserva 2013

Quiet a well known house now. I had the ‘17 over the summer and it was fine. It needed 24 hours to open though and I’d recommend a few years in the cellar assuming the ‘18 is similar.

In truth, I wanted to run a 'blind-tasting from hell' for some friends, with the weirdest selection of grapes and regions. Somewhat similar to the 'oddities' tastings that were running for a while on the Wine Pages forum.

Domaine Daniel Bouland Morgon "Les Delys" 2019 x6
Dominio del Aguila Ribera del Duero "Picaro del Aguila" 2018 x6

I have been drinking a lot of Daniel Bouland's wines lately- really excellent Gamay and great value around ~€16.

If you had to choose between drinking great wine or winning Lotto, which would you choose - Red or White?

In line with a comment I made on another thread I went just for the Hoffman Dallwitz.
Also a doz of the 2018 Amelia Park cab merlot. Great drinking for the price.

Great value, even here.

Have you tried the '19 Les Delys yet?

I would love to hear your thoughts.

3 of the Sami Odi Dallwitz...a first purchase for me.
A sixer of 2019 Red Robin Clare Valley Riesling, apparently made by Tim Adams, and at less than half price, worth a punt. Not heard of this label before.

Cheers Craig

I've got some 2014 Rhythm Stick/Red Robin Reserve Rieslings stashed.
Discovered these a few years back at the cellar door fest.

Not yet. I buy from a website which has limited time specials (although to be honest, some of them disappear and reappear with some regularity) and they let you stock orders for 30 days to combine the delivery. I guess I will get them end of next week or the week after, will let you know when I have opened one.

A bit of a weird month for me - didn't really buy anything in the first two weeks and bought some random stuff that I wanted to try for a while almost all at once. I got:

3x 2018 Wittmann Riesling Estate (on offer at $26!)
3x NV Sami-Odi Little Wine #10
1x 2019 Hofgut Falkenstein Euchariusberg Kabinett 'Arthuro'
1x 1999 Adega Viuva Gomes Tinto
1x 2013 Vadio Tinto
1x 2019 Catena Alamos Torrontes
1x 2018 Honorio Rubio Tremendus Claret
1x 2016 JJ Prum Graacher Himmelreich Kabinett

On the 2019 Bouland Delys, I did have it a couple of months ago, it's great with lots of structure and fruit purity. If anything, I found it a bit too young and primary, but I like my reds a bit more lean and savoury than most.

A store around the corner from where I live was closing down and a week before the doors closed they knocked back the price of everything down to cost plus 10% so I ended with a few choice items. I passed on stuff that needed years in the cellar, like a magnum of 2009 Bin 707 for C$250 and 2012 Grosset Gaia for C$45. Well I was tempted by the Gaia but instead for almost the same price I bought a 2005 Luis Pato Vinha Pan, Bairrada, Portugal, though you would probably be right to say I should have bought them both.

2017 Jean Paul Brun Domaine Terre Dore, Cotes du Brouilly, Beaujolais
2015 Robert Perroud 'Pollen' Cotes du Brouilly, Beaujolais
2018 Bellingham Bernard Series Old Vine Chenin Blanc, South Africa
2015 Chateau Laulerie 'Juste Ciel' (Semillon), Bergerac
2015 d'Arenberg 'TheDry Dam, Riesling, McLaren Vale/Adelaide Hills
2012 Augusti Torello Trepat Reserva Cava (Rose made from Trepat), Spain
2013 Raventos i Blanc 'de Nit' Sparkling Rose, Spain
N/V Dibon Rosado Cava, Spain
N/V Henry of Pelham 'Cuvee Catherine' Sparkling, Ontario, Canada
Martini & Rossi Bitter Liqueur
Punt e Mes Aperitivo Orginale
2013 Quevado LBV Port
Quevado 10 YO Tawny Port
2013 Messias LBV Port
N/V Niepoort Tawny
Compass Box 'Glasgow Blend' Blended Whisky
Wilson & Morgan 'Born on Islay' House Malt, Islay Single Malt (Distilled '06/Bottled '15)
Wilson & Morgan 'Highland Heart' Sherry Cask Malt, Highland Single Malt (Distilled '06/Bottled '15)
Port Charlotte Scottish Barley Heavily Peated (a 2012 release no longer made)
GlenAllachie 12 YO

January was an expensive month, savings notwithstanding, so I will need to be careful the next few months.
