My first round, up to last weekend:
• 2011 Mondot - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru (12/8/2020)
Continues to drink very well. Lovely, balanced claret with good depth. Just bought another 6 bottles- good value.
• 2018 M. Chapoutier Marsanne Bituit et Maximus - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Vin de Pays des Collines Rhodaniennes (12/7/2020)
Last bottle from a six pack, thought I had made a note already but apparently not. The last couple of bottles especially have impressed me. Mid yellow. Classic and correct nose of citrus and honeysuckle. Even, moderately rich, and balanced on the palate. Just a touch of grip. Obviously Chapoutier makes some of the finest Marsanne in the world, so it should be no surprise but for a cheapish mid-week type of wine (and a less favoured "label"/region) this offers genuine character. Will easily last and probably improve in the cellar over at least a few years. (90 pts.)
• 2015 Quinta de Cottas Douro Cottas Reserva - Portugal, Douro (12/4/2020)
This is a blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Cao, and it sees twelve months in French oak. Bright mid red. On the nose, something is just not right. There is some bright red berries, but also a soupy, porty, cooked note. The palate is better, but still feels a bit scalped, finishing quite short. Without the ability to compare, I will chalk this up to some kind of bottle issue, maybe poor storage over a hot summer? NR (flawed)
• 2018 Famille Perrin / Perrin & Fils Cairanne Les Sablières - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Cairanne (12/2/2020)
This seems to be a supermarket label that Perrin doesn’t like to acknowledge on their website, so I can’t say much about the blend or production. Nevertheless it gets a heavy bottle and the usual Perrin quality cork and capsule. And frankly this is one of my value picks of the year. Bright purple/red. Very pretty and pure nose of raspberry, jube lollies, and purple flowers. Sweet fruited, fleshy, and lithe on the palate. Perfect mid week / bistro / easy drinking wine. For sub-€9 it’s a bargain. (87 pts.)
• 2019 Quintas de Melgaco Alvarinho Vinho Verde QM - Portugal, Minho, Vinho Verde (12/1/2020)
Bright yellow/green. Touch of spritz. Leaps out of the glass with ripe citrus, grapey notes and fruit salad. Very fresh and clean. Just a touch of fruit sweetness. A little simple but very refreshing. A good match for lightly spicy Thai or crispy squid. (87 pts.)
• 2016 Vietti Barolo Castiglione - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo (11/30/2020)
On first opening, this is remarkably approachable. Mid red, this offers quite vibrant cherry fruit. Maybe some rose/floral notes, maybe a touch of deep varnish, but its overall quite forward and beguiling. On day two and three this fades a little. There is a lot more varnish on the nose, and the bright fruit shuts down somewhat. It’s still appealing but now the grip of the tannins feels a little out of balance. Not quite sure what to make of that, will re-assess when I open my next bottle. (90 pts.)
• 2018 Quinta de Covela Arinto Vinho Verde Edição Nacional - Portugal, Minho, Vinho Verde (11/30/2020)
Fresh and clean but not memorable. The acid sticks out a bit. No formal notes taken. (86 pts.)
• 2016 Domaine les Goubert Gigondas - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas (11/29/2020)
Last bottle from a six pack. There has been a bit of variation in these. Some have seemed quite Brett-y, with lots of barnyard character or chicken poo if you are less charitable, others like this one have seemed fresher. Plummy fruit. A touch of leather and earth. Good complexity for the money. (90 pts.)
• 2016 Bodegas y Viñedos Valderiz Ribera del Duero Juegabolos - Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero (11/27/2020)
This is 100% tinta del pais (Tempranillo), grown on gravel topped soil and with quite low intervention methods. It sees 36 months in oak, 80% French and the rest new American oak. Vibrant purple red in the glass, the oak is certainly still prominent on the nose. Even over a couple of days this continues to display a hardly moved persona of bright red/dark fruits and vanillin. Verges towards the extravagant, but not quite to the extent of being unbalanced. The palate shows dense red fruit, not quite as exuberant as the nose- still quite closed. Despite the oak and the ripe fruit, this stays just in balance. The question in my mind is whether the fruit can soak up the oak, or is it best enjoyed in the next couple of years for its youthful pleasures? Perhaps a shade over priced. (91 pts.)
• 2017 Quinta dos Carvalhais Touriga Nacional Dão - Portugal, Beiras, Dão (11/27/2020)
Bright purple/red. Really vibrant and fruit forward on the nose. Lots of bright red fruits, purple lollies, and vanilla hints. Reasonable balanced but just a little simple on the palate, albeit very drinkable. Plenty of sweet red fruit Cavour and just a touch of grip to the tannins to close. Overall, a nice, juicy, fruit driven bistro style but I am not sure it rises above that. For cEU19, the value is maybe questionable. (87 pts.)
• 2018 Quinta de Soalheiro Alvarinho Soalheiro 9% vol - Portugal, Minho, Vinho Verde (11/27/2020)
Mid yellow. Quite simple ripe fruit salad on the nose. A little bit of honey as well, but not as sweet on the nose as the palate- which really shows quite a one dimensional profile of ripe and quite sweet tropical fruit. This is as the name suggests only 9% abv and apparently has 6.5g/L of total acidity, but I don't see the residual sugar on the producers' website. It is not at the level of a dessert wine but well north of "off dry". An interesting idea, but not my style. Others may like it more. (86 pts.)
• 2019 Domaine Le Roc Des Anges Vin de Pays des Côtes Catalanes Aiglon blanc - France, Languedoc Roussillon, Roussillon, Vin de Pays des Côtes Catalanes (11/23/2020)
Last bottle (I think) from a six pack. This is a blend of Macabeu (or Viura in Spain) and Grenache Gris (according to the merchant). Made according to Bio principles, albeit not certified. Mid yellow in the glass, I probably would have been guessing Marsanne if I didn’t know the variety. This is certainly lighter on its feet than the typical Viura I have tried from Spanish producers. The palate opens rather lithe with some ripe but balanced apricot and a bit of honeysuckle. The finish is of reasonable length and pleasantly even. Good value at cEU13. I have also gone through a six pack of the equivalent red (which is a blend of Grenache, Carignan and Syrah) and it also offers great value every day drinking. (86 pts.)
• 2016 G.D. Vajra Barolo Albe - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo (11/21/2020)
Mid red. Attractive, vibrant nose- lots of crushed red berries and floral notes. Quite juicy fruit on the palate. Really approachable now, but it hardly budges over several days so I suspect it can do nicely with medium term cellaring. Overall a nice package, good value. (91 pts.)
• 2014 Jean-Claude Boisset Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Dames Huguettes - France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits (11/20/2020)
Brought by a friend, this had a bit of seepage from the top of the cork (my friend is not at all into wine) so this had me concerned - but needlessly. Mid red with a touch of brown. Maturing nose of earth, damp strawberry, mulch - which sounds a bit dire but it works and is quite lifted and ethereal as well. A little flat on the palate but given the age and uncertain storage this is not too bad.
• 2018 Two Hands Riesling The Wolf - Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley (11/17/2020)
This is bottle 4 from a 6 pack purchased in France. I was initially a bit unsure (for a start, Aussie Riesling has become uncommon for me and it was a bit of a palate shock) but I have warmed up to these. Mid green/yellow. Citrus driven nose, with hints of lime cordial, and a touch of toast. Quite sharp and angular on the palate, the acidity sticking out a bit, but finishing with nice, crisp, citrus flavour. A producer I have long enjoyed, but not one known to me for their whites - I would say this is fine, but certainly bad value at European prices (€19/bottle). May look better in a couple of years? (87 pts.)
• 2016 Artadi IZAR-LEKU - Spain (11/13/2020)
Really interesting and a bit different, with good purity and definition, a touch of salinity, and a pleasant, clean finish. (91 pts.)
• 2014 Nicolas Feuillatte Champagne Blanc de Blancs Collection Brut - France, Champagne (11/13/2020)
Bright yellow. Vigorous mousse. Sharp and citrus driven on the nose. A bit of sherbet, fresh cut lemon, which carries through on the palate. Very fresh and clean, maybe just a touch simple. Excellent value. (88 pts.)
• 2018 Pierre Gaillard St. Péray - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Péray (11/10/2020)
Bought a new bottle a year later. Still very clear, pale yellow. Either with the time or because this is a better bottle, this shows a lot more crystalline fruit, not as ripe as before. Very pure apricot and stone fruit notes, and a lively, lightly balanced palate. Lovely stuff. (91 pts.)
• 2018 Francois Grenier St. Joseph Chaussonot - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph (11/5/2020)
From 15-25 year old vines, this sees 12 months in oak- one third new, one third second fill and one third older. Very bright purple. This is quite ripe and opulent on the nose. Lots of dark and purple fruit. Quite concentrated and rich with air- notes of liqueur plums and vanilla as well. Plush and dark on the palate, rides a tight line between ripe fruit or over-ripe, but on the whole I think it manages to stay the right side of the line. The tannins to close are surprisingly firm. Enjoyable now, but I think it will unwind a bit and drink best in 3-4 years. (91 pts.)
• 2019 Château Sainte Marie Blanc Réserve - France, Bordeaux, Entre-Deux-Mers (11/3/2020)
50% Sauvignon, 40% Semillon and 10% Muscadelle. Pale yellow/green. Pleasing balance on the nose- restrained citrus, grass, some gooseberry, and a touch of minerality as well. Crisp and refreshing on the palate, with broad but not fat citrus and stone fruit notes, and just a touch of grapeyness and grip at the back. Superb value for <€8. (87 pts.)
• 2016 Pago de los Capellanes Ribera del Duero Reserva - Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero (11/2/2020)
This is from 80 year old Tempranillo vines, and sees 14 months in French oak (300L). Bright purple red. Very intense and pure on the nose. Youthful, too, even after being open a couple of days. Fully ripe purple fruits, almost a bubblegum character on the nose. Some oak notes but it doesn't dominate at all- merely adding a nice cedar-like complexity. Quite balanced on the palate, with fleshy red berries and quite grippy tannins. This has a long life ahead of it, really impressive. (94 pts.)

I'll play, then. Drinking around the world this month!
• 2017 Bakkheia Cabernet Sauvignon Priapus - Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Geographe (30/11/2020)
{screwcap, 14.3%} Opened in a crisis! Similar to previous note; gentle cabernet essence, fine dusty tannins, curranty fruit, medium acidity, medium weight, youthful, gentle. Should mature nicely over a few years. Good structure..
• 2008 Penfolds Shiraz Bin 150 Marananga - Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley (27/11/2020)
{screwcap, 14.5%} Deep ruby colour. Slightly developing nose, but still full of malty, prune and raisin aromas. Liquorice too. Full-bodied palate of super-ripe fruit, dry yes, but verging on amarone in style, which isn’t for Shiraz. Low/medium acid, medium powdery tannins. Roasted prune flavours, baked blackberry; certainly lacking in the gently meaty, seductive influences I associated with older Penfolds reds. Sits on the front palate a bit too, and the finish isn’t so long either. I really wanted to like this, I did; the all-Barossa Shiraz was the obvious hole in the Penfolds portfolio for ages. And this inaugural vintage is just too clunky, too hot, too pruney. Hadn’t Parker retired by 2008? Sigh. Not about to fall over, but what will further cellaring do for it? Hold, perhaps, even if only on the grounds it’s not that satisfactory now.
• 2018 Marisa Cuomo Costa d'Amalfi - Italy, Campania, Costa d'Amalfi (24/11/2020)
Slightly muddy garnet red. Poopy, bretty nose. Polarising. Settles a bit with air; compost, rotting organic matter. Still bretty I reckon. Palate is high in acid, with tart cranberry flavours, low/medium faintly gritty tannins. It's light/medium in weight, but finishes rather short. Better with food, but still a pretty rustic affair. (by the glass at Pendolino, Sydney)
• NV Gallimard Père et Fils Champagne Cuvée Réserve Brut - France, Champagne (24/11/2020)
Faint hint of pink to the hue. Strawberry tinted nose, and indeed palate. Fine vigorous bubbles, dry, medium high acidity and medium/full weight. Moderate autolysis character. Some bakery quality to the flavour too; there's altogether a pleasing developing aura about this. Persistent finish; tidy wine. (by the glass at Pendolino, Sydney)
• 2016 Guillaume Gonnet Côtes du Rhône Villages Le Hardi - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Villages (23/11/2020)
{screwcap, 14%} Solid garnet. Muted, blueberry aromas, little oak. Low-key, fleshy palate of blue/red fruit, not terribly distinctive, low/medium in acid, with gentle furry tannins. Dry, a bit dilute, fairly short-finishing. OK but dull.
• 2017 Elderton Chardonnay Eden Valley - Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley (21/11/2020)
{screwcap, 13.5%} Pale yellow with a green flash. Oaky nose; matchstick, cashew, melon. Palate tastes similar, with some vanilla bean too. Low/medium acid, medium weight, fairly simple oaky flavours in a popular if old-fashioned style. Short finish.
• 2020 Bakkheia Cojones Muy Grande - Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Geographe (20/11/2020)
{screwcap, 12.4%} Onion skin pink. Bright, obviously youthful nose of musk and roses. Bdx meets Rhine in the blend of Grenache, cabernet, Mourvèdre. Can take a decent chill (better with it, probably), has almost too soft acidity but thankfully is both dry and not too alcoholic, which knits the whole thing together. Light-bodied, interacts with most of the mid and front-palate, tangy, short/medium length finish. Commemorate the COVID year by quaffing it down.
• 2018 Young & Co Zinfandel Super Fresh - USA, California (19/11/2020)
{screwcap, 14.5%} Blue-tinged garnet. Not often you agree with the back label on a cheap red but I’d agree with blueberries and a bit of spice here. It’s perhaps a bit glue-like, both in aromas and flavour, in addition to the ripe blue fruit with liquorice overtones, but there’s only rudimentary oak (if any), low/medium acidity, low dusty tannins and a fairly simple finish, short but at least not too sweet. Medium body in a kind-of hollow way. For the $13 I paid you wouldn’t complain, but it’s not a wine to seek out, or cellar.
• 2016 Tyrrell's Sémillon Single Vineyard Stevens - Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley (18/11/2020)
{screwcap, 11%} Plenty of zesty lime flavours, slightly developed; light-bodied, with medium acidity. Still fresh though, medium length finish, dry, despite juicy fruit. Will keep a while; not terribly memorable, but fairly usually priced.
• 2016 Warramate Shiraz Black Label - Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley (17/11/2020)
{screwcap, 14%} Deep garnet. Expressive note of white pepper and red fruit upon opening. More air turns it a little chocolatey, but still with a spicey element. Palate tastes the same, medium weight, with medium acidity and low/medium dusty tannins. Straightforward wine, but decent and authentic tasting. Medium length finish which avoids too much heat. Second label wine, I think? It's a fine site, parked directly between Yarra Yering and Coldstream Hills. For the A$23 I paid, decent value too.
• 2019 Belardent Picpoul de Pinet - France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Picpoul de Pinet (16/11/2020)
{screwcap, 13%} Pale straw with some green flashes. Subtle nose of steely aromas with mild straw. Palate is quite densely textured although the acid isn’t deficient. Medium weight at least, with a furry sort of skin tannin as much flavour as texture. No oak evident. Bone dry, almost dust, but with ripe pear flavours. Even palate, medium length finish, but a bit monochrome. Yet, I don’t think it has a cellaring structure either. Pleasant enough, but not really memorable.
• 2006 Lerida Estate Pinot Gris Late Harvest Lake George - Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Canberra District (15/11/2020)
{375ml, screwcap, 13.2%} Deep yellow. Mild, aged nose of vanilla bean and gentle pear. Rather thin, metallic palate with those same flavours, soft acidity, and faded sweetness with a very short finish. Well on the downslope of interest now.
• 2014 Delamere Vineyard Cuvée - Australia, Tasmania, Pipers River (15/11/2020)
{cork, 13%} Mid yellow. Developed yeasty nose. Yellow fruit. It’s a chard/Pinot blend, but hte pinot’s not very obvious to me. Biscuity flavours, medium acidity, quite richly ripe to the point of full-bodied, dry, but without great depth or complexity of flavour. Even palate, medium length finish. OK but a bit anonymous. Not sure about further cellaring either. Disgorgement not mentioned on the label; 385 cases made so it’s hardly common.
• 2019 Michele Chiarlo Gavi Palás - Italy, Piedmont, Gavi (15/11/2020)
{screwcap, 12.5%} Light yellow. Vanilla and sandstone nose. Neutral palate, some stone fruit, dry, light-bodied, medium acid. Short/medium finish. Savoury style of wine ready to drink now.
• 2019 Zonnebloem Sauvignon Blanc - South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch (15/11/2020)
{screwcap, 13%, A$11} Mid yellow. Intense nose, varietal, of gooseberries and lychees. No oak evident. Decent palate, about medium-bodied, of ripe fruit, not quite so vibrant as your typical Marlborough, for instance, but still in that general new world SB environment. Medium acid, short/medium length finish. Unbeatable for the price, let's be fair about that. Not a cellaring wine though.
• 2018 Pierre Brevin Sauvignon Blanc La Plancheliere - France, Loire Valley, Val de Loire (13/11/2020)
{screwcap, 12%} Pale yellow, some green. Youthful aromas and flavours of stones, minerals, rockmelon. Not overtly fruity, and that’s not a bad thing. Light/medium weight, medium acid, no oak, tangy fresh finish that avoids fakery without being especially complex.
• 2018 Azulejo Albariño Rías Baixas Denominación de origen (DO) - Spain, Galicia, Rías Baixas (11/11/2020)
{screwcap, 12.5%} Mid yellow with a flash of green. Seashells, gentle limestone, salty rocks. Palate has a real tang of the seaside, helped by what seems a lick of sweetness somehow. This fleshes out the palate a bit but compromises the finish a touch. Almost enough to be distracting, like they felt the acidity needed toning down, which it doesn’t. This just needs to be a bit drier to be tip-top. Light/medium weight. Drink up.
• 2018 Casa Santos Lima Valcatrina - Portugal, Alentejano, Vinho Regional Alentejano (9/11/2020)
{screwcap, 14.5%} Deep ruby red. Lifted, plum and chocolate nose. Could be new world. Touriga may be the primary grape, but the Syrah shines through, at least to this Oz palate. Black spice-tinged fruit, low/medium acidity, soft and friendly tannins, most grape-skin derived it seems. The intense nose promises much, the palate is a bit more dilute for flavour, with a confectionary sort of tinge to it. Not exactly sweet, but, well, generous. Which doesn’t extend the finish past medium length, tingly and mid-palate. For the $17 I paid, you wouldn’t complain. Drink within a few years though I think.
• 2017 Cantine Nicosia Etna Vulka Etna Rosso - Italy, Sicily, Etna DOC (8/11/2020)
{vinc,13%} Mid garnet, not especially bright, in fact a bit dull. Muted nose; black plums, a bit of liquorice. Palate is a bit more flavourful, or at least overt. Medium acidity, low/medium dusty tannins, not much distinct flavour except that vague black plum presence. Just medium weight, but the finish is a bit short and patchy. Nice packaging and all, and maybe the flavour is the best you could do for $20 halfway around the world. No complaints really, but I wouldn’t cellar this.
• 2018 Calvet Grande Réserve - France, Bordeaux, Bordeaux Supérieur (7/11/2020)
{cork, 13.5%} Solid dark garnet, befitting its age. Nose of blackberries with a cranberry, smoky twist. The palate is pleasant enough, a bit diffuse, ripe, yes, but tasting a bit stretched somehow. Nicely even, finely gritty tannins, medium acidity and medium weight, just lacks for concentration and depth of actual flavour. Subtle oak only. Some generic blackberry, in a cabernet style, sure, but fairly simple. But then, at A$20 a bottle on the other side of the world should you expect more? Perhaps less money on the packaging and a bit more on the fruit would have helped...
• 2017 Poggio Anima Primitivo Lilith Salento IGT - Italy, Puglia, Salento IGT (6/11/2020)
{screwcap, 13.5%} Solid Bright garnet. Big coconut and raspberry aromas. Youthful. Palate has only minimal oak, lots of ripe red grape tannins and jammy character. Medium acid. Rustic but ripe and clean and modern. Medium/full weight. Tastes warmer than the alcohol suggests, but that’s the grape character. Still finishes rather short though, but decent for $20. Not a cellaring style though.
• 2013 Pressing Matters Riesling R0 - Australia, Tasmania, Coal River (5/11/2020)
{screwcap, 10.8%} Mid yellow. Pretty lemon curd nose, with a mineral edge. The palate is oddly broad and flat, as though all acidity has departed. It’s not the least bit oxidised, just lacking vibrancy. Bone dry of course, but I’m now wondering about the mix of ripeness and lack of sugar and acid. Tastes generically yellow. The bouquet is much the best part; the palate gives the impression it’s going to be medium bodied at least but then the finish - even though it might be- disappears quickly, leaving a gentle dry astringency of no particular flavour. Could be in a dumb phase but might not...
• 2017 Poggio Anima Sicilia Asmodeus - Italy, Sicily, Sicilia (2/11/2020)
{screwcap, 13%} Slightly crimson garnet. Quite youthful nose, all fruit, of mulberries, blueberries, chocolate, liquorice. Voluptuous flavours of blueberry, liquorice, with low/medium acidity and lowish, gentle, mostly grape tannins. Plenty of flavour though, in that sunny, ripe Sicilian way. Some furry tannins linger on the palate, mid and front of the tongue; it’s medium/full in weight without being too hot or baked. Not really for aging, but fine with a hearty dish on a cool night.
• 2016 Bay of Fires Riesling - Australia, Tasmania (1/11/2020)
{screwcap, 12.5%} Bright mid yellow. Only marginally developing nose and palate of lime and talc with minerals. Quite pure. Medium acidity only, but medium weight at least, with a medium/long dry finish. Nice earthy style still with decent fruit, but without too much citrus. Drinking nicely now and over the next few years.
• 2019 Andrew Thomas Wines Two of a Kind - Australia (1/11/2020)
{screwcap, 12%} Pale straw with a green flash. The Adelaide Hills Sauvignon may be only 45% of the total but it dominates the nose with gooseberry and passion fruit. The palate has tangy fruit, again sauvignon influenced, with any lingering sweetness just balanced by acidity. Light body, fairly simple in favour, shortish finish. Good with a chill, not so with cellaring.
