Currently available, but amazingly allocated, tiny amounts only to many retailers ... well this one at least!

I opened a bottle of the 2002 last night to try. Although it certainly had its merits and I am sure some would love it, it was too savoury for my tastes. There didn't seem to be any fruit sweetness in the entire package. Full on leather, herbs and spicy licorice, good finish and length but nothing in it I would care to cellar or taste again.
The 2001 had nice amount of fruit sweetnesss underlying the primary core of savoury flavours.

Hi Mark,
Just out of interest, how long do you leave the bottle/ what kind of period did you drink the wine over?
Reason I ask is that I opened a bottle, thought it was good but a little soapy, a little savoury, a little floral ... I even wondered if it had low-level brett. After a few hours though it bloomed into an absolute cracker, and this morning it looks beautiful too. I love it. I want to buy some. I was unconvinced at wine oz, but looking at it over a period of time at home, I'm now convinced. Do you still have some left in the bottle? Can you look at it again tonight?

Soapy, no.... unless it was my wife sitting next to me - but I left about half a bottle out uncorked overnight and then corked and stuck it in the fridge this morning, so I will give it another try tonight.

Interesting to read Campbell's comments above after I posted the following comments on another web site about the Chalambar 2002:
Interesting wine. Double decanted on opening, but still tasted a bit strange - almost thought it was the elusive Brett. Didn't like it much at that point. an hour later it was becoming richer and sweeter and reasonably tasty. Finished the last of it after about 4 hours. Really liked it by then. Very fine tannins and deep rich flavour, but no crust, unlike earlier vintages. Seemed to have a lot more of the Bendigo shiraz flavour than Grampian (ie, more earth than sweet burgundy). Certainly very different from my favourite 2000, which is much lighter in colour and flavour, but with the same intensity. A very good wine and excellent value for money.

Ok, stayed in the fridge until last night then let it get to room temperature... It is a very nice wine but I still stand by my original tasting, I cannot get any fruit sweetness from the package. Loads of everything else but nothing in the fruit sweetness spectrum unless it was buried. However, saying that it had bucket loads of intense flavours, wonderfully integrated tannins and superb length. I really am in two minds whether or not to get any... Perhaps just a 6 pack...

There's no doubt that the Chalambar 2002 got better as the evening progressed. The bottle I tasted was OK on opening, and then a cracker the next evening after 1/3 was left (with cork inserted) in the bottle overnight. What all this says to me is that this baby's time is yet to come. After a few years in the cellar. Maybe the straight Victorian Shiraz ($14 odd) is better to drink now?

Yes, I enjoyed it too. Is it 100% Shiraz, or have they put some other varietals in there as well?
