TN: Voyager Estate Chardonnay 2012

G'day

Yellow / gold in colour. The nose is dominated by cedary oak, with some yellow peach and grapefruit lurking underneath. The palate is better balanced, with good supporting acid and slight tannic grip underneath the developed fruit and cedar. There's an underlying richness to the wine, and the finish is reasonably long.

I'm not sure this will improve with more age - 6 years is about right, I think. It should hold for some time, however.

My previous comment about it 'holding for some time' has held up (pun intended). This wine has barely changed in the past 18 months. Although the savoury characters still dominate, there's still some pretty good fruit underneath (peach, grapefruit) and it still tastes somewhat fresh.

I still need to look at my remaining bottles more frequently, but it will be interesting to see how much longer it will hold for.

Thanks for the tasting notes (as always) Allan. I visited the estate about a year back and had the 11, 12 and the current vintage (at the time) but ended up bringing back the 2011 as my favoured wine. I felt as though this Chardonnay benefits from age and even the few bottles I have left still seem very fresh. I don't have the depth of knowledge or experience to gauge well but I think bottle age gives it a bit more depth and the acid integrates better, the wine seems creamier in a good way.

Me too, although I did arrive about 15 minutes before the Xanadu cellar door closed which is not ideal.... I found the acid in the Xanadu Chardonnays to be completely over the top, almost young Semillon-like, which jarred for me with what I am looking for in a Chardonnay.

PS I am not an expert either
