Their debut 2001 vintage was mediocre at best. Now the tables have turned and this monumental Shiraz is a revelation. When it was annointed 96pts by the "Sheperd of Monkton", it was simply unprocurable. Just to borrow a line from Reid Bosward "Un re-fined, Un-couth and Rude" this is the epitome of the archaic law of seduction from morality.

Kaesler Bogan 2002 (15.5%) Roaring plum puree and chocolate vanilla on the nose. The attack is explosive and thick textured. Exceptionally ripe panoply blackfruits, spices and all things nice. Super intense, massive structure but not jammy. Everything here is amplified - heavy metal at full blast rather than subtle acoustics. The tannins are ripe and plentiful and the finish is fat and long. For those seeking big, imposing flavours, this is the most decadent "Bang" for the bucks! The law of dimishing return make the O'Bastard too rich for my veins.

Martin, the 2002 Bogan is our kind of wine, I loved it and fortunately got a good supply into my cellar before it was annointed by RPJ. If you're after some more, keep an eye on the Australian auctions where a little has appeared recently at sensible prices too.

I'll be interested to see how this develops over the next few years as I will with many of the other super 02s from the Barossa.

Being an Old Bastard myself, I couldn't resist putting a few of that 02 into the cellar as well, particularly after being fortunate to catch a bottle open at cellar door one afternoon.

I've tried it at CD and thought it an excellent follow up to the 02. I took a bottle half full away with me on a 500km hike to the South East, left it two days and thought it would be oxidised.

Not a hint of it, just wonderful pure fruit that accompanied our Wagyu steaks really well.

I'll post some TNs when I have a bottle soon in a more serious context.

After reading TORB's review, I'm also comtemplating on the O'Leary Reserve(ouch...$$$) and saw ur praises fr the archive. Could u elaborate further?

I'm sure Ric's TN would be accurate, I didn't take any notes and only saw it from barrel in May 04 but it set me back on my heels with it's sheer quality.

The asking price is steep for a first up wine with no pedigree but the makers have pedigree and my palate tells me it's excellent so who needs pedigree?

Bin 389 has pedigree but it's only a shadow of it's former self so what's pedigree really worth?

A big $ ask but if you can get it without paying excessively then a few bottles are definitely worth it, particularly in a few years time when you drink them. To my mind it's alot better than some other big $ asks like Meshach, Eileen Hardy etc
