A first visit to the Gunderloch winery in Nackenheim. Big list of wines, virtually all on tasting as far as I can see, although I thought it rude to ask about the BA and TBA, given the prices! Also, since I was really only interested in the top-shelf (to buy) and much of the rest isn’t available locally (Australia), I didn’t bother with the modest offerings, although we get some availability of the Red Stone and the Jean Baptiste in Australia. All are for sales at CD at prices listed. Large appropriate glasses, generous pours, no charge, friendly, informed proprietress; a textbook visit, thoroughly recommended. Heavy bottles though; the GG wines weighed in at a hefty 1.45kg each.

{screwcap, 12.5%, €18} All declassified grapes from the Rothenburg vineyard. Dust and earth, with a bit of citrus. Dry, with medium/high acidity, the palate is subtle, almost to dullness, with earthy characters, light-body and short-medium length. Not sure what to make of this? Open too long? - 2018 Gunderloch Niersteiner Hipping Riesling Großes Gewächs - Germany, Rheinhessen
{screwcap, 12.5%, €30} Lovely apple notes on the nose. You expect something off-dry but it’s juicy with apple flavours, acidic too, medium weight and a polished clean palate. Medium weight, with a medium finish. Very nice indeed. Fruity, but not in a pejorative way. - 2018 Gunderloch Niersteiner Pettenthal Riesling Großes Gewächs - Germany, Rheinhessen
{screwcap, 12.5%, €34} Polarising nose of earth and mud, sour grapefruit aromas, then some custard. The palate is stark and soil-like, with some juicyiness, but then really finishes with an earthy and mineral-like presence. Hard to find actual flavour to pin down here. Medium weight, medium/long tactile finish. Time will help this surely. - 2018 Gunderloch Nackenheim Rothenberg Riesling Großes Gewächs - Germany, Rheinhessen
{screwcap, 12.5%, €38} Very restrained at this age. All minerally structure and drive, dry, with medium/high acid, only the lightest cut of citrus Riesling fruit buried under the quartz (although the vineyard is all red stone, of course). Medium weight, long finish, but granular and textural. Give it a dozen years. - 2017 Gunderloch Nackenheim Rothenberg Riesling Kabinett - Germany, Rheinhessen
{screwcap, 9.5%, €23} Apples and a sweet petrol nose. Apple sauce palate, off-dry, with balancing medium acidity, light/medium weight, and an even palate. Very nice. - 2017 Gunderloch Nackenheim Rothenberg Riesling Spätlese - Germany, Rheinhessen
{screwcap, 8.5%, €25} Fumey nose of baking apples. More intense than the kabinett and slighter sweeter, although still in the purview of off-dry. Seems a bit less complete that the K, although maybe a little cellar time will help that. Medium acidity, near medium weight. - 2017 Gunderloch Nackenheim Rothenberg Riesling Auslese - Germany, Rheinhessen
{375ml, screwcap, 8.5%, €18, AP 16 18} Lime with apples. Apple fruit in many dimensions, tangy-sweet (medium-dry), medium-bodied, seductive enough, with a medium length finish focussed towards the front of the tongue. This is pretty nice but easily outclassed by the gold-cap version - 2017 Gunderloch Nackenheim Rothenberg Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel - Germany, Rheinhessen
{375m, screwcap, 8%, €28, AP 17 18} Much deeper gold than the regular bottling. A bit gluey on the nose. Aromas of apple compote. Medium-dry sweetness, medium high acidity. Wonderfully concentrated on the palate, with impeccable balance and structure. Medium weight, long finish which just is. Very nice wine indeed.
