what to pull the cork on ??

Post by thelongroad »

Thought I'd draw on the collective wisdom of the forum and seek some advice for red to open with xmas dinner - will be having filet mignon with an array of roasted vegies and stuff like that. Because I don't buy a whole lot of the better stuff due to budget, would like to know how any of the following are travelling -

1993 St Hallett Old Block
1994 St Hallet Old Block

1993 Jim Barry McRae Wood Shiraz
1994 Jim Barry McRae Wood Shiraz

2001 Brokenwood Graveyard Shiraz

1995 Dalwhinnie Shiraz

1992, 1994, 1997 Dalwhinnie Cabernet

1990 Cape Mentelle Cabernet

1990 Yarra Yering Dry Red #1

think that'll do - cheers

John,

The only one I've tried is the Graveyard, and I wouldn't be drinking it yet.

Actually, with lot's of airing, you can open the Graveyard 2001 (but not the 2000) however it's time for the 1990 Yarra Yering No.1, it should be absolutely lovely. I'd be very interested to know what the 1993 Old Block's like as a few years back it was extremely ordinary. The 1994 Dalwhinnie Cabernet should shine.
Cheers,
Attila

The 93 old block is still very ordinary - had a well cellared example 2 months ago. The 94 Old Block was a much better wine that is probably at it's peak right now.

The 90 Cape Mentelle is OK too. Needs to be drunk soon. Not sure about the rest.

Has anybody had a 98 Grant Burge Mesach or Darenberg Ironstone Presings presings lately? I will probably open them on Xmas day bt if they need more time I will go back to 98 Kays Block 6 and Noon eclipses from the same year.

Jeremy Oliver despite people's concerns with stylistic preference (but that's another story) is a very good judge for mine on drinking windows. I now use them fairly religiously.

I had a 1994 Dalwhinnie Shiraz a couple of months back and it was right at its peak. Therefore the 10 year rule for Dalwhinnie shiraz should hold true for the 1995.

Of the others, it seems that your 1993's might be past it, while the 1997 Dalwhinnie Cab and the Brokenwood might be a ways off yet ...

Hope this helps.

Reply on the 1998 d'ARENBERG Ironstone:

A good wine, concentrated with powdery tannins. Must be decanted 5 hours before drinking. You'll enjoy it. Some fierce tannins and grainy oak.
Not as powerful and tannic as 1999 and not as fruity and harmonious as the 2000 but still very good.
I am of course a fan.

John,

I am not a fan of the St hallett Old block: just a bit to simple for me so I leave it to others - but note that it usually peaks at around a decade but then holds for considerably longer.

McRae Wood shiraz is a deightful wine: the 1993 was a very good wine from a very mediocre vintage, and I finished mine this year: clearly in the peak window but not showing any signs of falling off the perch. THe 1994 is also very good and when drunk earlier this year seemed to have a bit of improvement left - leave for about 12 months but certainly drinking well.

Graveyard is a baby: just leave it alone.

Dalwhinnie shiraz 95 is a beauty but needs a couple more years (although arguably very close to window.

Drink the Dalwhinnie CS now - particularly the older ones

1990 was not a great vintage for CM CS: drink now (but the 1991 is much better )

1990 YYno1 just coming good too
