Guess the picture

Post by Ozzie W »

I came across this impressive aerial photo which was taken earlier this month.

Can anyone guess
a) where it was taken;
b) what it's showing?

That didn't take long!

Thousands and thousands of smudge pots. Here's a close up.

The scale is phenomenal, but I guess at the prices you have to pay now for Burgundy it's worth the effort.

They burn oil to create air currents in an effort to keep away the frost.

For those interested, the photo was at taken at Chassagne-Montrachet (near Beaune) by Vincent Dancer, Sunday morning 14 April.

Yes, what sort of oil? Diesel, bunker, ...? Would be a lot of smoke surely.

Yes, though as it's spring there - no smoke taint.

I'm not sure what sort of oil they use, but I assume it's just diesel as that would be the most cost effective oil. The smoke is good as it helps prevent radiative cooling which causes frost.
