The JM Reserve is Myattsfield's best red of each vintage, and the composition of the blend varies from year to year. The back label for this wine tells me it's 57% Cabernet Sauvignon from Bickley and 43% Shiraz from Carmel - both in the Perth Hills.
A Cab Shiraz - an appropriate blend for ANZAC Day, I think. Decanted an hour before service.
Purple in the glass, heading to crimson. Menthol initially on the nose, settling down into developed blackberry, dark plums, cedary oak, some mocha and dried herbs. The fruit, although developed, is still forward and the oak plays a supporting role. The palate is even, with the fruit sliding nicely over the tongue. There's some freshness from acidity, and the tannins are fine but drying. The wine finishes medium to long.
Overall, very balanced and drinking well right now. The back label also said "Cellar with confidence", and it was right.
Cheers
Allan
