Suggestions for a 1944 vintage wine/port???

Post by Simon »

I'm looking to buy an old wine/port for my father, hence the 1944 vintage. Any suggestions??? and also where would I find it?
cheers,

A Seppelt 1944 Para Port may do the trick and it is still drinking ok ! I trioed one last year... its pushing around $60 to $70 at auction. Perhaps a 1944 Seppelts Great Western Sparkling Burg, pushing around the $500 mark though if you can find them...

Some of the Saltrams wines from 1944 still pop up occassionaly.

Try the Australian auctions like Langtons, Sterlings, (mine.., although no auction now for me until early Feb, sorry) and Oddbins.

Also try going to Google.com and typing in ONLINE AUCTION, add AUSTRALIA to the keywords and then even the KEYWORD 1944, you may find something useful

Being an avid port man and collector of old VPs I can say that 1944s are extremely rare except for the 44 Seppelt Para which you should be able to find at some of the better retailers. Mark's price guide is spot on although you'll pay more at retail of course.

If you can see through it, it's not worth drinking!

A 1944 Para went at the Lawsons Menzies auction yesterday at $67.00.

Yep. It's a no-brainer in this case. Relatively easy to find, affordable, and reliably drinkable (stunning, really) as well. Go for it.

cheers,
Graeme

Thanks to everyone for your help. I've managed to get hold of a '44 Seppelt Para for $60, bargain if you ask me! (Cromwells in Sydney) So I'll be enjoying a glass with my father on Christmas day, as the snow flakes are falling in beautiful Switzerland. Happy holidays to everyone and thanks once again.
