Unscientific poll - how many days do you drink?
Probably not the most unbiased group to ask, but I recently read that a tiny percentage of Aussies drink every day - I assumed it was at least half, if not the majority. How often do you guys?

I refuse to answer on the grounds that I might incriminate myself.
Wine, women and song. Ideally, you can experience all three at once.

Guilty m'Lord.
Re: Unscientific poll - how many days do you drink?
Was 5 or 6
More like 3-4 now, but I stuck the 5 in as historically (and when not working away from home) more accurate

Re: Unscientific poll - how many days do you drink?
It will be a cold day in hell before I don’t have a drink. But seriously, once a fortnight or a month would be my AFD. Every time I get a blood test (once a year) the first question I ask the doc is ‘how is my liver function?’ So far the answer is ‘Just fine.’

Re: Unscientific poll - how many days do you drink?
Surely a cold mid strength beer at the end of a hard day does not qualify. I call it fluid replacement. If so put me down for 6. (I like to feel righteous having 1 AFD per week). If not 3-4

Re: Unscientific poll - how many days do you drink?
I'm not sure how useful this question is on it's own. For example, it doesn't differentiate between someone who drinks 1 glass of wine a day (150ml) 7 days a week with no AFDs versus someone who drinks 3 bottles of wine (2250ml) just 1 day a week with 6 AFDs.
Re: Unscientific poll - how many days do you drink?
only 3-4 days a week.
But every night.

Sometime you need to open a bottle or two just to make room for your new purchase.

Re: Unscientific poll - how many days do you drink?
Generally my wife and I have wine / beer on the weekend. Usually one bottle of wine Fri / Sat night, sometimes one spread, half the time followed by a fortified chaser and sometimes two beers.
Birthdays and anniversaries might permit a mid week celebratory drink.
Weekdays is usually water, milk, tea so I guess that's 7 days?

Re: Unscientific poll - how many days do you drink?
I try to have an AFD at least 2-3 times a week, but mostly unsuccessfully. 2 AFDs is too few, I feel, but I struggle to have more as there are so many wonderful wines to try.

Re: Unscientific poll - how many days do you drink?
It's a bit hard for me to quantify but I'll try.
I've been an expat for almost 20 years so developed a lot of close friendships with folks from food and wine cultures where consumption is daily. So I lost the guilts of the Aussie AFD's push witnessing these peoples' good health and positivity to their healthy food cultures ( drinking wine daily with home cooked Mediterranean culture for example ). So I'm A-OK with daily wine consumption though wary of amounts.
I'm also a pilot and shift working I found finishing very late I preferred not to drink wine to wind down as an empty stomach and sugar levels it could be a little harsh and shorten sleep ( which is a problem ). That said, coming home late before a string of days off and watching a footy replay to the wee hours with a good bottle and a meal is pretty neat if my team won.
Finally, I'm an adventure trekker, so I'll disappear into remote parts and not consume alcohol for weeks on end. I find its better for my hydration rather than getting drunk with my team on their local wine before a big climb or a day's trekking in the jungle. Though if heavily malarial I may take a bottle of Barolo chinato.
So I have no issues with daily drinking with a high quality diet. Very cautious professionally and cautious with fitness activities.

Re: Unscientific poll - how many days do you drink?
Great responses, guys. Honestly, impressed we're not all 7 dayers..... Assumed so based on us being wine lovers! I figured it was more accepted in Aussie than more places but I guess not haha. I second those who reference the Mediterranean POV. That being said, a midweek dinner for me easily involves Wagyu steak (as well as cheese kransky with sauteed onions and capsicums) so of course I need a nice complementary drink to it!
Re: Unscientific poll - how many days do you drink?
2-3 days a week for me...
Unfortunately I have a partner that doesn't drink...so that drives me to finishing a bottle over several days (Hopefully via Coravin soon) or even just beer because so much wine just goes to waste...
Although when I'm in Sydney now...seems like 6 days a week....

Re: Unscientific poll - how many days do you drink?
3 to 4 days for me too.
I generally won't consume any alcohol Monday to Wednesday unless there is a bottle left open from the weekend (admittedly this is rare), I have some sort of event on or there is a public holiday the next day. I generally don't drink at work functions, mostly because the quality of the drinks is ordinary so I just don't bother. There are a couple of exceptions there where something half decent does get poured. Sometimes I drink on a Thursday but usually that will be 1 or 2 glasses of wine or 1 or two beers at the most. During the hotter weather, I definitely drink less wine and probably less in general. Most of the beer in my fridge right now would be 4.2% or lower, mostly in the low 3s.

Question, for those under 7 days... And again, still surprised given the forum... Is that an intentional effort for afds or just natural? Fuck figured everyone here were daily tipplers haha

Re: Unscientific poll - how many days do you drink?
Those of us who fall lower than the "everyday" benchmark may have NWR (non-wine related) activities in our lives. Some of them require driving, and wine consumption is frowned upon during these activities generally (e.g. sport). Therefore, the AFDs are an unfortunate consequence of lifestyle.

Re: Unscientific poll - how many days do you drink?
I'd be lucky to drink once a week, on the rare occasion it might be twice.

However when I used to travel for work, I would typically not drink at all during the week (crappy hotel wines, marked up to eye-watering levels are not exciting - I pursue this hobby to drink what I find enjoyable/interesting). Weekends saw us sharing c. 2 bottles over three evenings.
Re: Unscientific poll - how many days do you drink?
Consumption patterns vary through out the year, depending on social events etc. We consciously monitor our consumption at home and try to have at least 2-3 days AFD days a week normally, however, there will be periods where I'd drink 7 days per week, but its not bottles of wine, but at least a glass. My wife is not a big drinker of red wine, hence I may have a bottle open on a sunday night and then consume it over the next 2-3 days.
We also go through periods where we set goals not to drink for a week or at times at least a month.
I've just challenged my team to have 2 x 7 day periods in the next 8 weeks of alcohol free - there were a few 'groans'.

No respite for me, the two sports activities I participate in involves going out for beer afterwards. With one of them we call t a rehydration session with the boys.Waiters Friend wrote: ... and wine consumption is frowned upon during these activities generally (e.g. sport).
I suppose I could say that I only drink wine roughly five days a week. Hmm, that sounds much better.

With 2 young kids, I'm a taxi driver for them most days. So my AFDs are are born out of necessity, not desire. I drink every Friday night and then once or twice on other days if I'm lucky.Nick Wine Guy wrote:Question, for those under 7 days... And again, still surprised given the forum... My job requires the ability to focus clearly for extended periods, it is not viable for me to drink the night before I work, so its a choice primarily for that reason.Nick Wine Guy wrote:Question, for those under 7 days... The side benefit of helping keep body weight down doesn't hurt too.
Re: Unscientific poll - how many days do you drink?
Two AFD per week for health and relationship preservation reasons. Tend to drink more when on vacation. On the five drinking days I will have 2-3 glasses of wine. Not usual to have more.Nick Wine Guy wrote:Question, for those under 7 days... And again, still surprised given the forum... Is that an intentional effort for afds or just natural? Do you think its Australian wine that affects you or just alcohol? I'm genuinely interested.winetastic wrote:My job requires the ability to focus clearly for extended periods, it is not viable for me to drink the night before I work, so its a choice primarily for that reason.

Our household quaffers are Wolf Blass this month and half a bottle and you feel it. Usually we have barbera, lighter in alcohol and a bit of sulphur but thats it- zero impact on sleep nor a mild preservatives hang over.
I don't consume alcohol before regular examinations at work which are very intense. However, I do use a sleeping sedative.
