TN: Seppelt Chalambar Shiraz 2004

I've been a long-time buyer of this wine, and, for a relative bargain (and at the lower end of the Great Western shiraz offerings), this has proven to be a reliably good wine with reasonable ageing potential. I think it has been made for over 50 consecutive vintages.

Purple red in the glass, and reasonably opaque. Complex nose with blue and red berries, leather, a little earthiness, coffee / mocha, spice (possibly cloves) and a little eucalypt. The palate is even, with developed fruits, moderate and integrated tannins, supporting acid and medium palate weight. There's a degree of intensity in the wine that belies the palate weight and reasonable but still medium finish.


At 15 years old, I was surprised how good this wine is, although it's not likely to improve. The 2005 and 2006 has been pulled out as well for current drinking, so it will be interesting to see how the next two vintages look.

It's good that you keep the faith Allan. Sometimes we wine enthusiasts get carried away chasing the newest and latest and let the old stalwarts fall by the way side. I bought a couple of bottles of the 1998 Chalambar when i was in Australian and if I come across them I will pul the cork on one of them.
