TN: Howard Park Mount Barker Riesling 2017

Post by Waiters Friend »

G'day

This wine, although labelled Mount Barker, is from the Mount Barrow vineyard which is quite close to the boundary of the Porongorups wine region. This wine has been labelled as Great Southern in earlier years, and may or may not have contained Mt Barrow and/or Porongorup fruit in the blend. A separate Porongorup Riesling has been made since about 2010.

12% alcohol. Pale yellow in colour with green tinges. A delightful blend of citrus and green fruits, with lemon/lime, some pear and green apple. Also a touch of florals and orange peel. The palate is fresh and crisp, with high but not sharp acid, and the fruit flavours flowing over the tongue. The wine is refreshing and finishes cleanly.

A typical young Howard Park Riesling, which shows all of the characteristics and balance that will allow graceful ageing. I'm looking forward to watching this evolve over a decade or more, as earlier vintages are doing.

Cheers
Allan

Tasted again tonight. Acid is still not sharp, colour has darkened a little, and its all about the fruits at the moment. Maybe a touch of sherbet? Delicious now.

I’ve had this a few times. Excellent wine, and I agree with the ‘refreshing’ comment
