Pimp my Cellar!

Post by Rory »

Finally got a decent group of Peninsula wino's together to drag some much needed drinking out of the cellar.
The night was at La Bouchon in Balnarring... awesome food to match the wines.

For me, the WOTN was as I expected, the '96 Winston Churchill. Still has an amazing line of acid, and only got better as it breathed up in the glass.
The surprise was how good the '88 Quarts de Chaume was. It will live for ever.

Nice wines Rory! How were the Corton-C and Barbaresco? Heck, give us a brief note on them all!

Okay Tigger,

1996 Pol Roger Winston ChurchillWOTY so far for me. Incredible line of acid still there. Length, power.
1998 Tyrells Vat1 Semillon In stunning form, like the Pol Roger, a great line of acid still running through it with great length. Will live another decade with good cellaring.
2005 Remoissenet Pere et Fils Corton CharlemagneWell, no premox, so that's a good start! Not bad, and average Corton, good texture and weight, maybe lacking persistance.
1988 Domaine Des Baumard Quarts de CharmeBrilliant. Perfect control of sweet and acid, awesome length, awesome complexity. A joy.
2009 Bouchard Clos VougeotA mere pup. Those that left it in the glass for over an hour got to see it open up and deliver the goods. Great wine.
2001 Bests Thompson Family Shiraz. Sublime. Truly a great age worthy Oz Shiraz. Decades left in front of it.
1990 Penfolds Bin 90A. A classic. Ageing well, full if power and length. Stunning.
1990 John Riddoch. Another cracker. Perfect condition. If you thought the '90 Black Label was something else,This tops it.
1995 Produttori Rio SordoPerhaps should have gone after the Bouchard, got a little lost at the end. Still in great shape tho.

Thanks Rory, that's a great lineup. That 90A is amazing, as is the Vat 1 98 when corks are kind. Winston a bit variable for me, so happy that you got an excellent bottle. Never tried a Thompson Family with good age on it like that, reckon it would be special if the young ones are anything to go by.

Cheers
Tim

Great line up.

Agree with you when the Barbaresco needed to be served...I've seen lots of Aussies do it at the end but they need to be right after Pinot or in that same vein as they're so much lighter than Cabs and Shiraz, etc...

98 Vat 1 is one of my all time faves...Hoping the mid 2000 Vat 1s end up like that..although under screwcap I think we're still 20 years away...

I agree it would have been better there too. Rio Sordo is sexy and svelte and the most approachable PdB along with Pora. 1995 a modest vintage too.
