TN: A tale of two "Ducks"

Post by Chow Chow »

Both wines were decanted for 2hrs.

Wild Duck Creek Springflat 2000 (15.5%)
Dark red, explosive aromas of ripe black fruits, violets, cedarwood and coffee bean. The gorgeous entry to the palate is deceptively soft, supple and sweet. Once it hit the middle palate the intensity took over with plenty of ripe blackberries and plums. Spicy and fragrant with fine mineral tannins and a long liquorice infused finish. A big wine nevertheless!

Wild Duck Creek Reserve Shiraz 2000 (15%)
Shiny, dense, deepest purple/black in color. The aromas took appx. another 2hrs to open up. Dark chocolates, liquer fruits and blackberry. On the palate it's simply stunning, viscose texture, rich mouth coating tannin that grip me by the jaw. My palate is immediately captivated by endless layers of voluptuous sweet glossy fruits. This is the essence of Shiraz. The fruits were as ripe as it can be, but not jammy. Massively structure, imposing and concentrated. A truly exceptional wine of heroic proportions which could still be tasted as I was heading home.

Good notes. Agree the Reserve was stunning but the nose was too rich and sweet for me. But what a wine! here are my TNs from 4-Dec-04:

2000 Wild Duck Creek Estate ‘Springflat Shiraz’ [100% Shiraz]

: 15.5% alcohol

: Reddish colour with light purple shimmerings. Peppery sweet cinnamon nose. Very bone dry on palate with abundant dusty and chalky tannins. Clearly need more time. Beautiful structure. Hard to gauge what was on the palate given its relative youth but tasted ‘winey’ and perhaps one-dimensional at this stage!! Give it 3-5 years before trying again. High alcohol not a problem at all.

: 2000 Wild Duck Creek Estate Shiraz Reserve [100% Shiraz]

: 15.0% alcohol

: Mid purple colour. Super intense honeyed, even tokayish nose. Incredibly lush, with lashings of almost liqueured liquorice. The sweetest nose I have come across, reminiscent of vintage port or a liqueured port. Perhaps too sweet? Some would say (derogatively) ‘jammy’. Liked it but not sure if I love it. Palate is a step up in concentration and depth. Intense, lovely aromatic and perfumed berries and spice. Seems to have all the components in a judicious mix of oak, body and tannin. Sweetness is there on palate but unlike the nose. Clearly for the long haul but approachable still. A very good wine that has great potential but will it lose its overly luscious nose that erupts into Darrell Lea sweet liquorice and bombards the nasal passage? Needs 8 years+.

Passed on it. Wasn't this the Duck Muck Reserve? I can only imagine the size of this behemoth!
